rpg's and me

I love RPG's.  I must buy them.  I must play them.

I never get to finish them.

Why?

Final Fantasy VII: I got to the bottom of a cryo chamber, and on the trip out I encounter a dragon.  My guys are so beat up they can't get past them.  Only one save so I can't just go back a bit.  File is long gone by now anyway :(

Final Fantasy XII: I love it.  I talked to some crazy tribe and they give me a bird.  I have to go to a town on the other side of this cave with tons of wolves in it.  My dudes are too weak.  I can't get thru.  do I have to level?  I don't want to level!!! I want to play the game.

Fallout: My character gets addicted to drugs, can't even hold a pistol.  I can't make myself start over

Fallout 2:  I never could get out of that opening cave

Wasteland: My drive gives out..never get to finish it.

Bards Tale: My copy dies.  I can't fight the last dude

Other Bards Tale Sequels: way to big.

Ultima IV: I have the bell, book, candle.  Now what?  I was lost forever

Roadwars: I found out there was a bug in the game and you can never win.

these are just a few of the failed rpg's I have played.

I don't really know what to do.  I do know that I am mostly dead in these games due to terrible design.  If I follow the story in a FF game, why should I ever have to worry?  I should be leveling up enough as I play.  From looking at forums, it looks as tho it is expected that I just grind without advancing the story.  I don't know if I can do that.  I love FFXII so far, but just grinding for grinding sake....

sigh..I might as well go back to wow....

Anyone have any ideas for me for RPG's?  i love the story, I love the exploration, I love the advancing character.

I hate getting stuck someone where with no hope of solving the problem.

speaking of final fantasy VII i still have a videotape of myself defeating sephiroth at the end and i swear it took me 57 minutes to beat him (" he kept turning me into a damn frog") so most of the time i spent using maidens kisses on my party members but now i can got through the entire game in a day like nothing. just thought i would share a funny little story

The real frustrating thing about most of these games is I stopped because the game designed was set up in such a way that if you went outside of expectations you could break the game and not be able to continue. I think that is my real reason I loved MMO's. They plan for people to not break the game. I never felt like I was stuck in WOW until I hit lvl 60 and couldn't raid. Of course I am not going back to that time sink now there is more to do!

@ captJB I can't play BG. I really really wanted to, but I couldn't get passed the tutorial town. When it came to combat training my guys got kicked everytime. The only RTS style combat in and RPG I could ever do was Dungeon Seige. I prefer the turn based / time based style combat.

It's funny that you mention Final Fantasy VII. I got pretty far in that game as well. I actually beat the first, second and 3rd Final Fantasy games on the NES/SNES. I however didn't grind what so ever in VII and sometimes would avoid combat all together (hey, an escape option? Sweet!) only to get to Sephiroth (one of the first encounters I was told, I thought it was the end of the game) when he mutates into different stages. I would get him to a certain form and he would obliterate me. I had two saves prior to that, that would have put me way behind and I didn't want to go through it all over again. I need to try again as the story was compelling, just don't know if I want to sink my time into those 4 disks again.
