Warhawk makes me want UT

So last week I looked thru a computer magazine at a Borders.  I saw they had a little sidebar article on it that talked about a new feature of Unreal Tournament called "Unreal Warfare".

It looked like UT has a completely new feature where you can have a commander.  That commander can see who is on his team, what their gaming stats are like, and he can give way-points.

That means if I was to join an online server and someone was leading the force, he would see that I die a lot but do ok with turrets.  He then could give me a way point that went to a base that was going to be attacked and I could help defend it.

For me that would make a much more fun experience then Warhawk.  I am having fun in Warhawk.  It is the most fun I have had since the first Unreal Tournament game.  The problem with Warhawk is I do not know if I am contributing and helping at all.  Most of the people do not have microphones, and no one ever says, good job on that turret guy!  Keep shooting down Warhawks.

The appeal that UT2008 is going to have for me is the ability to make a difference in the game and be recognized for it.  I want people to know that instead of rushing for a tank I stayed back and delayed the enemy from rolling over our base.  Right now Warhawk only rewards lots of killing, rather then team play.  A person who sits at a choke point on a map with a tank or sniper rifle and holds back an army from advancing should get just as much reward as the guy who jumps into the middle of an enemy base and shoots down 12 people buy himself.

I also can't wait to play a FPS online that lets you feel more like you are working together as a team.  Right now in Warhawk if we all attack the same base that is great, but it is never organized or coordinated.

Online FPS has come a long way.  From the confined levels of DOOM to the open landscapes of Warhawk.  It has only gotten more fun, but I can't wait for new social mechanics to take place and make the games even more fun.

Time to buy a 360: RainbowSix:Vegas- teamwork reqd. ChromeHounds- ditto, most definitely (and it had Commander mechs to do what UT hopes for) GRAW1 and 2- solo matches are for weenies COD2- if you ain't talking, you ain't winning COD4 (beta for now)- if you don't communicate well with your team, you're getting schooled by Timmie. H2 & H3- winning teams have great commo As a PS3-centric gamer, you are severely limiting your access to the vast majority of the gamers on the site with your self same concerns and solutions. I give the PS3 a year and a serious price cut to bring it into more 2o2p gamer's homes. Right now, it's just out of financial reach for an "extra" console for most of us. Good luck getting a crew together-

Well any team based game online benfits from voice chat. The thing missing from all the games you mentioned (from what I have read review wise, I havn't played all of them) is the commander role of delegation. From what I have read from UT2008, as long as a team has a commander it should be able to function if people listen to the commander. In GRAW or COD does a commander layout a plan of attack? Can he mark up waypoints for people to follow? Assign specific tasks? Usually it ends up with everyone yelling out instructions at everyone else. If their is any structure it is because as a group you have choosen to work together, and it is not an element that is built into the game. The closest thing I have have seen is planetsides commender interface, but it only really allowed squad communications. It fell short in my mind because of lack of world leadership ability. The other game that had an excellent leadership screen was Natural Selection (a half life mod). The only weakness of that game was the commander couldn't boot bad players and their was no way the commander could know who functioned well in what roles. I have high hopes that UT2008 might make great steps into exploring this element of gameplay.

Chromehounds had the full blown commander class. Setting waypoints and objectives, as well as greatest (sensor) view of the battlefield. As far as the other games go, when you play often with a team or clan, there tends to be a bit of established procedure- in GRAW everyone can set waypoints and as a squad we all tend to shift perspective, throw an extra eye in that direction. No real commander needed, mutual respect is the key. Wierd- I just used online gaming and mutual respect in the same paragraph and it wasn't over a Timmie being an asshat. :D But going into matchmaking with strangers is an absolute crapshoot. 2o4D does interchange pretty well- we're all casual but active gamers and we have eveloped a lingo unto ourselves for battlefield commo. You'll just have to go buy a 360 and get into the mix with us! ;)
