As I close the tailgate, my license plate falls off. WTF??? It's plastered on with double-sided tape. I examine it, and think hmm..someone stole my license plate holder and replaced it with this? Weird.
Yes I'm that stupid--it never occurs to me that it's not my plate.
So I throw it in the back thinking I'll stop by somewhere and pick up a new holder. My gf comes over, she wants Starbucks. I tell her we need to stop by Autozone for a new holder and she asks, are you sure it's your plate? Smack my forehead--I go look and no it isn't!!!
I've had my plates stolen before and my registration tags peeled off the plate. Never had a replacement plate left in its place though. Thieves are pretty much the lowest level of society as far as I'm concerned. To just sit and leech off someone else, that's about as pathetic as it gets. And the planning they put into this shit, they might as well be productive instead of destructive. But hey that's just me.
When I was giving my report to the cop, I had handed him the 'new' plate and said something like 'you can just keep that', he said 'ummm...yeah I was going to do that anyway'. I'm such an idiot, I just never even considered that no, they wouldn't let me keep the plate that most likely came off a stolen car, and here I was gonna be so gracious and let the cop keep it.
So now I've got to take off work to go stand in line at the department of motor vehicles for god knows how long. Thanks thieves, I hope you're having a wonderful day and I hope it ends in pain and dismemberment for you. At least the cop told me that if they do find my plate on a stolen car, they can almost always put the guys away for longer if they have a stolen plate on it, because it's another crime they can tie to the pricks. But maybe they told me that to make me feel better.
