Shared on Thu, 07/23/2009 - 05:10For those who hadn't already heard, I've been rated 50% TDRL, signed off on the rating and should be hearing back on it today. Of course, they said something similar the first time my packet went to Texas, and a week after that they told me it got kicked back for more testing. In other news, my leave got approved for the trip to the Pitt, so short of clearing, UCMJ action, involuntary comittment to a mental institution, sudden loss of life or limb or any combination of the aforementioned issues, I'll be there. My real point of pride though comes in form of small shiny things. I have successfully pulled the bullets and powder from the Czech manufactured, copper washed steel case, corrosive Berdan primed 7.62mm x 54R Russian cartridges I get for 7$ a box, and successfully replaced them with 46 grains of IMR 4895 and a 125 grain .308 dia. Nosler Ballistic tip Boat tail. Yeah, I know, the bore is more like .310 or .311, but I have spoken to enough people and seen enough load data calling for .308 (also the .308 was on sale and a lot of people said that, even with a conservative charge, the bullet pretty much explodes if it hits bone within 100m, who woudn't want that?). All that being said, this weekend I'll be shooting those ten rounds (mind you for the time being this is an experiment in reloading never fired, factory steel cased ammunition to achieve a more accurate cartridge and more desirable terminal results... oh yeah... 5 of those rounds I also polished up with a Cerflon dry lubricant) along side some of the factory ammo (7.62mm x 54R Russian .310 dia. 147 grain jacketed ball, the stuff I unloaded to make the new load) I'll be using to try and zero the new scope (forget to thread lock the damn mount and the little fucker came loose on me, the lesson here is to not get so excited about these things that you forget the details). I'll post the range report after I get it cleaned up, and if anybody wants the process I used to do this let me know and I'll see if I can't shoot a video detailing it.
