And in other news...

The Mosin shot like a dream.  I know some of you may look at this and say, 'Is this a shotgun pattern?  Aren't you in the Army?  You can't shoot worth a shit!'  To which I must reply,  'No shit, genius.  Ya think?'  I'm pretty good at CQB range (25m or less), but since my eyesight has started to fade anything remotely resembling distance shooting has become quite challenging.  However, I fired 40rds comprised of 2 different manufacturers products and all 40 rounds hit a piece of paper the size of an average adults torso, from low center mass to high center mass (also note 5-10 rounds were fired free hand).  Handloading should help to tighten this up some, not to mention perhaps using a proper. full rest to determine the actual accuracy.  It has been said that the 7.62x54R is comperable to the .30-06.  It's been awhile since I fired anything in the .30 cal class and after driving that totally awesome steel butt plate into my shoulder 40 times in one hour I have come to the decision to purchase a recoil pad.  I'm liking the idea of the slip fit Limbsaver by Sims Laboratories (the same outfit that makes some pretty good stuff for compound bow shooters).  I wanted a .30 cal centerfire bolt action rifle and the price kept putting the brakes on that idea. Then an ad in Shotgun news grabbed my attention and in 2 seperate payments keeping the purchase looking more like grocery shopping than a firearm purchase I not only got a .30 cal bolt action rifle, but I got a piece of history.  Thinking about getting another one and sporterizing it for medium game, because animals taste good and there's little more satisfying than building your own rifle.  Of course the end all be all of this idea is going to cost a lot more than $150, but I'm still building my shop, so it's likely going to take awhile to make it happen.  Bottom line, with the right ammo and beaucoup practice at the range, it could be a deer rifle come the fall.

I used a cut down Mauser for my first hunting rifle....it treated me well till the stock split....I like slip on but plates to keep my classics as origional as possible, but I do find they start to cut into my accuracy at the 100-300 yard range....

JUst picked up another 100 rounds ($7 for a box of 20 w00t) of the copper washed Czech 147gr ball. Good stuff, not appropriate for hunting but good to shoot and it will most likely blow someone's guts out their back. Looking for someone to do the transfer out of the kindness of their heart and pick another one up to do a ranch rifle style sporter conversion. The trigger feels like a DA revolver, but it seems to work. The recoil wouldn't have been as bad if I had had a better shooting position.
