A review... about a film...

Been awhile since I got all self serving and personal, but I took a chance tonight and watched a film that may not have been in my best interests to watch.  I watched 'The Hurt Locker'.

'But Citizen D you're an action movie guy, that's an action movie.'

Actually, it's a war film.  A film about a war I participated in.  Twice.  My father spent a year in VietNam, down in Tay Ninh with the Wolfhounds as a JAG Officer.  Until I brought home 'We were Soldiers' prior to SGT D's Excellent Adventure, he absolutely refused to watch VietNam war films.  I didn't understand why until after SGT D's Bogus Journey.  Now I get it.  'Apocalypse Now' and 'Full Metal Jacket' will always be motivational films for me, but I understand why MAJ D won't watch them.  I doubt this generations anti war effort will serve to be motivational for future generations of warriors.  If you're looking for teen starlets whining about the horrors of war, this film ain't it.  If you're looking for some swole motherfucker one arming a medium machine gun packing assault rifles with neverending magazines, this film ain't it.  This is a film about men who knowingly, willingly do dangerous shit, recognize the hazards of their line of work and keep doing it.  They are US Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal.  They, among others, are heroes of mine.

Short answer upfront:  This is a great film, but is no substitute for the real thing.  Don't expect to watch it and magically know what it's like to have the short timers shakes in a bad neighborhood where you don't really know who the bad guy is 'til you're trading hot metal with him.  That said, I found the characters to be believable and the environment fairly accurate.  For a decidedly violent film, the humour that comes naturally to dangerous men and women was noticably absent.  That's not necessarily a bad thing, since I'm not entirely sure who the target audience for this film was.

If you haven't seen this film and are in the market for a tense action film or first person snapshot of dangerous business in the current theater of operations, check it out.  This is a film about real life superheroes, similar to, and with similar Hollywood license as the film Bravo 20.  If you're disappointed, it's because you wanted to watch something else.

Ignore the hole's mindless commentary, this was the only copy of the trailer I could find that I could embed.
