Something a little different...

I originally posted this at tcunation.com and thought it would worth sharing here:

This past Sunday (I'm lobbying to change Sunday to bitter clingy day) afternoon I went to the range to start breaking in my new toy (6" Beretta Neos U22). I brought a fair variety of ammunition and and shot for a good two and half hours before all the cool kids showed up with their girl friends and children. By the time I got done shooting I was wishing I had brought some water with me. On the way out I stopped by the pro shop to grab a cold drink. While I was there, somebody's mother was in their trying to buy some .22lr for her kids as they had run out. The pro shop didn't have any either. I, on the other had, had plenty at the house and had some leftover in my range bag. I paid for my drink and had this young lady come out to the car and gave her about 100 rounds of Federal Bulk and 60 rounds of CCI MiniMag round nose. She wanted to know how much. I told her to go shoot with her kids, and make sure they grew up to be responsible firearms handlers. For those of you who regularly go to public ranges, throw a few hundred rounds of inexpensive .22lr into your range bag. You never know when you'll have the opportunity to assist in the development of responsible youth.

Range Report for those interested: I fired between 400 and 500 rounds of Federal Bulk Hollow Points, Federal Champion Lead Round Nose, Federal AutoMatch Lead Round Nose and CCI MiniMag Round Nose combined.  I had maybe 6 stovepipes and thinking about it maybe 2 dimpled primers which I reloaded and fired.  I believe all malfunctions were the Federal Champions.  Still, this is not all that bad during break in.  I'll be firing another 500 rounds this weekend weather permitting to finish the break in.  I, somewhat, zeroed the sights off hand and managed to get allmost all the holes within an 8" target, mind you it looks like a shotgun pattern but, all things being equal, it ate up everything I fed to it and this is the break in period.  Next weekend I may use a rest and start to find what it actually likes the best.

You know, I've never been to a public range. I don't know how I feel about them. I really don't trust anyone outside of military/vets or police with firearms. That was alot of trigger time though. Man. I need to get a rifle and go to the rifle range. Need to keep my skills up.

I'm a fan of the Remington 597. It's cheap, and with a little work will outshoot your ability. Rimfire Central has a group that can help with most issues. As to my range, it's backed by TN Wildlife Resources Agency, and it's the only public range in the state with an International Trap stand. Also the fact that's in close proximity to FTCKY most of the people you'll find on it are military (active, reserve, guard, retirees) and their dependents. Always fun watching joe trying to teach his townie girlfriend to shoot, especially when she's never touched a firearm in her life.

Yeah that does sound funny. Although I know some women that can kick my ass in combatives... there's got to be some that can outshoot us all too. lol. Thanks for the tip though. I'll look for a range like that.

Good post. I was planning on going to the range tonight to do a little shooting and fishing. I almost bought a Neos but ended up with a Ruger. I love my .22s. So much cheaper to shoot. Every time I pull the trigger on my Glock, I can feel my wallet getting thinner and thinner.

The neos is a great little piece with a beautifully short single action trigger. It can't be more than about 4lbs. Of course by the time I bought it, there seems to be a shortage of .22. However, I've been stock piling picked up 1100 rounds of Federal Bulk, and if they still have some tomorrow I'll probably pick up another 1100. Also have close to 1000 rounds of CCI MiniMag HP. Now I just need some optics.
