Shared on Thu, 01/28/2010 - 08:22Thanks to a 16 hour marathon of Mass Effect 2 the night before I pretty much slept through the State of the Onion address, and have little to say I haven't said in the last year regarding the matter. So I'd like to take a moment to give a heads up regarding, not so much a capitalism related opportunity (though I bet the bars and other venues the band plays in would love for you to throw some bucks into their business), but a cultural one. I have a buddy who plays 'fiddle' (I grew up listening to classic rock and classical music, we always called them violins) in a Zydeco band out of the Greater New Orleans area. They call themselves T'Canaille (http://www.myspace.com/tcanaille), which may mean little something or other, don't know, never bothered to ask, and french isn't one of my stronger languages (I speak english and lead, both of which are fairly well understood around the world). Anyway, This is yet another style of music that is pleasing to my ears. As I sit here in the middle of the country, where rural is mistaken for the South, freezing my ass off, this music brings visions of the place John James Audubon made his name painting pictures of the landscape and the critters that inhabit it. Close my eyes, throw in some WallyWorld Boudin and canned Natural Light and it's almost home. While you probably won't see me 2 stepping, you will see me consuming large quantities of pork, pork byproducts and piss beer in a can and enjoying Zydeco. If you listen to rural music, like country and western, bluegrass or rockabilly, you will probably find something in the Zydeco genre that you like. It's fun music, and while I can't promise you being able to two step will get you laid, it couldn't hurt. If you find yourself in NOLA, keep an eye out for T'Canaille.
