Remember when you were a kid in grade school, and you’d make these stupid paper mailboxes (or some places would just use paper bags with your name on them,) and you’d put them on the front of your desk, and then all the kids in your class would walk around and put little valentines cards in them? And then there’d always be the one kid that only got like 3 or something? Ok, well, I was THAT kid. I never cared for valentines day. I’d only hand out like 3 myself, because I hated most of them anyways. I had a pretty good persecution complex going when I was a kid.

Things are quite different now, but I find I still don’t care much for Valentine’s Day. When I was in college, my girlfriend and I used to refer to it as “Black <day of week>”.  It’s on Tuesday this year, so we’d call it “Black Tuesday,” except what we’d really be saying is “Black Twosday.” It’s a pun.

Then I got a little older, and then I had a husband, (not THIS husband,) and you’d think there’d be the obligatory “doing something special”, but it just seemed like a waste of time and money to both of us, which brings me to current times.

Yet older, and now having a valentine to be proud of, I seem to have a fundamental objection deep, deep down that prevents me from spending an unreasonable amount of time and money on this “holiday.”

It’s almost like if I acknowledge it, then “They” win. Who are “They?” I have noooo idea. I don’t know what I’m fighting against, exactly. I don’t understand why I’m so opposed to it, but this what I do know:

I still have some authority issues, and I don’t like anyone deciding for me when or where I’m going to shower my beloved with gifts and surprises. I’ll do it when, and if, I feel like it, thank you.

Hmm…. I’m my own therapist…..

Okay…. So what I’ve discovered through my ramblings here, is that, basically, I don’t like Valentine’s Day because I’m defiant, and, possibly, miserly…… Good to know.

Anywho, I am not, for some reason, opposed to other people celebrating it in grand fashion, and so I hope all of you have the day just how you want it.   ~Hugs, 2old2play~

With your permission I'm going to file the serial numbers off of this story and tell it to my therapist like it's me. I just can't wait to see him peer over his glasses at me and say "why do you describe the mailboxes as 'stupid?'"

My favorite valentines have all involved just having the whole day to actually spend with my valentine. Breakfast, some fun, lunch, more fun, and then dinner followed up with fun. The only real rule is that it can't be spent watching TV or sitting around. Cram it full of activity. It's hard for my wife and I now with little kids, but both of us have given up on spending a bunch of money that result in no memory attached to it.

Had the same situation in elementary school. I Gave a valentine to a girl when we were in the second grade and she gave it back to me in front of the whole class. Obviously it didn't have any lasting effect.
