Shared on Sat, 09/15/2007 - 22:55I took the weekend off from work. I have training all this next week, so I need to try to get myself acclimated to an early schedule. I can't be yawning every five or ten minutes in this next class like I was doing in the previous classes. Hopefully it will work.
I have Project Sylpheed for the 360 sitting here waiting for some attention, but I just can't quite remember what I liked about the old PC version (that came on 3.5” floppies). Maybe I have to play it to remember. Maybe It'll get some attention tomorrow.
In the meantime I've been playing UT2004 and Doom3 on the PC. What got me playing these games was reading about the next up & coming version of UT. From what I've been reading, the programmers have been having a difficult time porting the game to the 360 because MS likes to keep everything under tight wraps. Go figure.
The UT project team wants to have cross-platform compatibility for mods & maps. I guess they mean mutators and maps. I hope they get something simple and easy for mutators, mods & maps to go cross-platform. Last thing any gamer wants is to have some inane voting system for what is going to be checked and ported.
I have to also wonder how Valve & Steam will handle mods & maps on TF2. Allowing users to create maps and mods are part of the lifeblood of these games. With only the occasional free or paid maps & mods the games will stagnate and fade away.
Rented and watched a good bunch of movies. Here are some pocket reviews...
The Peaceful Warrior – Drama, philosophy, sports. Without being dismissive, this movie is kind of like Karate Kid but with a gymnast student and Nick Nolte instead of Pat Morita. Part sports movie, part inspirational/motivational/philosophical movie. Can give you and anybody you watch it with a good deal to discuss afterwards. Recommended.
The Astronaut Farmer – Adventure, drama. Like Peaceful Warrior, this is a movie about realizing and living a dream. Only this movie is minus a lot of the philosophy. A good fairly clean and entertaining movie. Remember to watch the bonus out-takes for a short take on Billy Bob Thornton reprising his role of Karl Childers in Some Call It A Sling Blade. A very funny bit.
I Am David – Adventure, drama. The movie tell the tale of a 12 year old boy that escapes from a slave-/work-camp in Bulgaria and travels across Europe on his way to Denmark to deliver a secret sealed in an envelope. Aaah, a heartwarming story that can tug at any remaining heart-strings. A bit rushed at the end, but overall a very good movie.
The Long Weekend – Comedy. Ok, well sure, comedy was the point. The main movie plot and dialog were basically worthless. The short video clips mixed into the movie were absolutely hilarious. If you like how they intersperse odd bits into the show Family Guy, then you'll get a kick out of this movie. Recommended just for the intermixed shorts.
Trainspotting – Comedy. Yep, an oldie but still very much a goodie. I actually own this on laserdisc, but my player, receiver and TV don't play well. I'll have to buy the DVD. This is a Scot/English movie about a group of heroin addicts and the one that wants to clean-up and start living the dream (choose life, job, starter home, dental insurance, leisure wear & matching luggage..). Fortunately it has subtitles so you have a chance of understanding the dialog. But lets face it, you're going to watch this movie for the depravity, cursing, nudity, sex, music & violence. Go watch it already!
