Today has certainly started off as a big news day.
Fidel Castro announces he will step down on Sunday. Raul Fidel has been in charge already for 18 months, so I guess this just formalizes the change in leadership. Amid some muted and timid cheers, the Cuban exile community is coming to the realization this change is analogous to giving a dog a new collar. Yep, same song, different verse. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
Still, there are glimmers of hope. Raul has supposedly signaled that he is willing to establish diplomacy with the US, and that is a good start. If Raul can pull off a democratic socialist government would be the next big step. Opening the border, um, allow free travel between US & Cuba, should only come after the US has signaled we are prepared for an influx of a few hundred thousand exiles. South Florida couldn't stand that kind of population explosion, so I think a good idea would be to load these potential new citizens into planes and fly them to far off states for processing. Yeah, not a chance of either of those happening, but I can hope, right...?
The other big news...HD-DVD is officially dead. Long live Blu-Ray. Ooo-rah! Yeah, you could see this coming for the last week, or so, but now it is official. I guess I know where any tax refund/rebate will go - buying a PS3. Yep, I love HD movies and I'm willing to spend good money on chasing HD entertainment options. As I see it, the PS3 has the best Blu-Ray player available right now - current profile, upgradeable to newer profiles and a quality gaming machine is a good plus.
Hmm, Ok, in third place is Apple's announcement of a $30 price drop (to $50) in iPod Shuffle and the intro of a 2GB model. Pretty spiffy. As pointed out on other sites, these make great gifts for good friends, not best friends who probably should get a Nano, but decent friends. Now quit reading this and go buy, consume & spend (China is depending on us).
For all those that live in Wisconsin or Washington - GO VOTE!!! Preferably for Obama or McCain. As I see it, Obama is the least objectionable Democratic candidate, and if you have to vote Republican then McCain is your choice (or don't vote). Oh, yeah, if you live in Hawaii, go do the caucus thing (whatever that is).
Now, I have to go check for rain and hit the road and bicycle repair shop.
