My man's back surgery is July 11.  We are scared, of course.  But, we tried everything and went thru all the steps demanded by insurance, job, etc.  He started with his PCP, who did xrays and found some problems.  Prescribed some Naprosyn for an anti-inflammatory.  I truly believe doctors say it is inflammation when they have no idea what it really is.  That didn't help, so onward to MRI.  Ahhhh, he DOES have real problems that are not necessarily "inflammation".  Referred to an orthopedist.  Change in anti-inflammatory, including something akin to prednisone, without any good results.  He has had physical therapy, chiropractic, shots in his spine, exercises galore which he has done religiously, and just about anything else you can think of, except rest.  Yes, he continues to work at a physically demanding job in severe pain.  Now what?  He's moved on to pain killers and fears addiction.  Not!  Just pain control, that's all.  It only continues to worsen, and pain meds only take the edge off most of the time.  We were dead set against surgery, but what is left?

So, keep us in your thoughts.  If any of you have had back surgery with good results, I would like to hear about it.  I need encouragement.  Right now, it is soooo hard.

good vibes sent your way. best of luck to both of you. the best man from my wedding had back surgery about 10 years ago. he had some minor trouble for the first few months. he took pain meds for that. eventually he was off the meds and now he can do most of the stuff we used to do as kids. he says it is the best thing he ever did and wishes he had done it years earlier.

If my calculations are correct, you are getting married on 7-15, which is the same day I got married on 6 years ago. Awesome. The 15th is an easy number to remember and you should never forget your anniversary. Congrats in advance.

My Dad just had 5.5 hours of it a week ago Wed. This is after 2 epidurals and a bulging disc reduction. He had 4 vertebrae decompresses, fused, 2 rods installed, and donor bone to build up the region around the screws.. That being said, he's still in pain from the surgery, but not his back. Dr says this will definitely fix his back. Of course, he's 72 yo so his recovery time is going to be a while. Don't wait until he can't move, do it now.

I'm 35 and I had back surgery for a bulging disk about 5 years ago. Within 6 months I was back playing soccer and I would say I made about an 85% recovery to normal. I'm now hobbling around with a fractured tibia sustained while playing said game. Although the surgery isnt nice and recovery is about 6-8 weeks I had a very good experience so good luck with it!

ps I know they are antiinflammatories but I find naproxen works well to relieve back pain.

The world needs Pollyannas, it helps offset the much more pervasive Scrooges. I'd rather be 63 than dead, so keep the birthdays coming and welcome them with open arms!

Huh? Since when was your middle name Pollyanna? I thought it was just "Ann"?

Congratulations on the XBox Live AND the Birthday. I will save a spot on my friends list for ya. What do you like to play? I turned 40 this year...it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be though.

Soup, you are a putz. Capn, I am currently playing Halo single player but am willing to try Halo 2 or CoD3. I will be a total noob to both multiplayer options, it won't matter! I'm just anxious to start the experience.
