his PC in the shop

I think I'm on a roll here.  Something else to rant about.  How do you take a 78 year old, guy, introduce him to the internet, and keep him from breaking the computer??  This is someone who is sorta close to me.  He has had this computer for over a year.  Yeh, warantee gone!  All he does is search for "information" and try to find porn, which he has been unsuccessful at, so far.  Oh yeh, he is absolutely anal about deleting anything he doesn't think belongs, which is just about anything and everything.  For the last year+ he has been deleting files that were, um, sorta important, cuz he didn't know what they were.  And, he is compulsive about emptying his recyle bin.  Oh, but virus scans and such?  What?  You mean I have to schedule those?  Do it myself?  I ran a scan on his computer when he was starting to have problems getting on the internet.  omg!  The internet clutter and spy ware and god knows what else!  Yikes!  Well, the computer ended up in the shop.  They wiped it and reinstalled.  $239!!!!!  And I have just spent the last couple hours reinstalling his other stuff, getting him on the internet, etc.  I am trying to remain calm, but I could just SCREAM!!!!!!  Deep breath.......

Only a month till I run away from home.

The Chinese have a saying...If you save a life you then become responsible for it.\r \r When you befriend the computer illiterate you then become responsible for them.\r \r I eventually just taught my wife to take screen shots of error messages and to do whatever the hell she wants. I get home, sift through the error messages and figure it out from there. Added benefit, living together makes this process a lot easier. I can handle it a little at a time. Sounds like you have offsite computard friends. *Sigh* \r \r It's not all possible that a nurse would have any trouble saying \"no\" to a friend is it?\r \r Also, a syndrome I have some familiarity with. My wife is a Cardiac Cath nurse, all of our friends have at least one, if not two, nurses in the family, and I always feel like when I read your blog that I could lift it and drop it into any of theirs.\r \r If it's any comfort at all, I even look forward to reading your rants!\r \r Good luck.

Take away his local admin rights and pick up TrendMicro Internet Security Suite for him. \r \r Or.... tell him to get a mac :) or Linux, Ubuntu Linux is fairly windowsish.\r \r

Um...you probably would save a lot of time if you would just give him the url to youporn or redporn and tell him not to deviate from those sites, that they update the porn daily and have a year or so of backlogged stuff for him to sift through. Virus problem solved. Heh.
