Shared on Mon, 03/17/2008 - 18:26I am just toooo nice. A couple months ago my Nurse Manager asked me to do her a huge favor. She played on my sympathy. Another clinic that I used to work per diem needed someone to replace the primary nurse for a couple weeks. The other nurse now has cancer and has retired to get treated. So, they have hired an agency nurse to fill in, but the regular one wanted to go on vacation. Well, having been there and done that, i needed to think about it for a few days. Even tho she insisted I didn't have to do it, I knew better, so I finally told her I would. Now this is a small clinic, and usually 2 nurses run it pretty easily. But me and an agency nurse? Yikes! So, a couple weeks ago the NM told me she had hired a 2nd nurse and that he would be there, as well. Oh, that's nice. Well, I started last week with one day of orientation, then Thurs and Fri I was the infusion nurse and I felt pretty comfortable. Now......this week is different!
I have been told that I am the charge nurse. WTF? I don't even work in this clinic, let alone run it! Then, what I had figured out already, I was to be orienting the new guy, since he had only been there a week. Neither of them can do chemo. The agency nurse refuses to do certain paperwork, which I have to pick up. And, she feels pretty good about pointing out that I am not doing charge duties like 'Barb" does. Oh, btw, this is the Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic. These people are all either getting ready, or have already gotten a bone marrow transplant. Some are pretty sick, most are not. I could keep plenty busy doing "mobilizations" and transfusing blood and platelets. Mobilization is when you give hi dose chemo to sorta kill off the bone marrow, and then when it starts to work again, that's when you harvest the cells. Mobilize the cells, get it?? See how much I have learned in the past week? All the doctors come to me for everything, and I don't even know where things are! i take all the phone calls from patients or other agencies, and I am, like, who knows? Got a fever? Get thee to the ER... Got a rash? come on in and see the doc.
I sent my friend in the infusion clinic an email and asked her if I could come home. Not! She misses me, but, I gotta stay where I am and save some more lives. Question is, who will save me?
