We closed the clinic Friday and moved the whooooole thing to the new digs.  I'm not sure how or why they expected 13 nurses to pack, move, unpack and put away all that stuff, but we did.  There were literally hundreds of boxes all over the place.  That great big new clinic?  Seems a little small now.  The whole setup was designed by someone that wanted to make us look good.  No nurses could have been involved cuz it is so spread out.  We want to know where the restroom, breakroom and nearest elevator are.  Well, all are far enuf that you can't leave your area without asking someone to watch your patients.  Announcing potty breaks just seems like TMI.  Well, clinic reopens this morning.  We shall see.

Speaking of which, how much does a beautiful new hospital wing cost?  I need to vent here, a little.  All state employees have a freeze on raises and bonuses.  They took back a percentage of our wages spread out over two paychecks.  That was a couple months ago.  There is a hiring freeze.  We are lucky cuz we can hire for the new clinic.  They have blocked just about all internet use, which is maybe the hugest bummer of all.  We have to park off campus and take a bus in.  It is so expensive to park in the deck, I couldn't afford it even if I did have a spot.  Which I don't.  Other things?  Yeh, there are little things....  Like doing a late night once a week.  Nasty.  It seems they have taken all our perks away and expect so much more out of us.  I know of at least one great nurse and very good friend that is leaving mainly because of the late night issue.  Not everyone can dedicate one night a week to getting home, well, whenever.  The latest I have heard that the last patient was finally done was 9:00.  I luv my job.  I luv my patients.  I even luv most of my coworkers.  But, it's the things that I don't consider part of my job, like those listed above, that make me think I need to look elsewhere.  But, I won't.  Maybe.  Oh, this whole rant?  I just want to fucking get paid what I am worth!  I save lives!  I have a masters degree in nursing!  Yes, I chose to work as a peon, but this is the thing......We need our perks.  We need raises and bonuses.  We want/need internet access.  Blah.  That's all.

So you said you had an emergency so you could get off work...so what! It's called a mental health vacation. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do. I took off 2 days from work recently by saying I was sick when I wasn't. I had to because they wouldn't let me off work and I felt like I was about to have a nervous breakdown. What you need doesn't always line up with your work schedule. If you don't stop and take care of yourself no one else will. As for the internet comment... I have internet at work. I refuse to work somewhere that won't let me get online at all. It's a nice little outlet in the middle of the day. It helps to take your mind off things. I just met you at the LAN but you don't strike me as the kind of person who would neglect patients to check your email. Don't let these guys pick on you. Don't thank people for being an ass. True, we are all entitled to our opinion but they were rude. It just goes to show that they probably have never had a hard day in their lives and have no idea what it's like. Keep your head up Perl...it'll get better.

I agree with all but internet access. You should be doing your job instead of goofing off on the internet. If you want internet access on your break, bring in your laptop and a wifi or cell connect card. The Internet is not a right.

I agree that internet access isn't a right but it is a perk. Something employers can do in lieu of high wages to keep employees happy. Like a box a doughnuts on Friday mornings, that isn't a right either, but it is a fairly cheap way to make the work atmosphere a little lighter. Yes, nobody would want their employees web-surfing when they should be working but you wouldn't want them hanging around the water cooler either...ya gonna take that away? Wanting raises & bonuses, saving lives, masters degree, - None of that is crossed out by her faking the emergency for a 3-day vacation. Especially since she had been trying to get it scheduled over a half year in advance. Employee loyalty isn't a right either. Having your most experienced workers not jump ship cuz the next place will pay .05 more per hour is a perk you might be smart as an employer to try & get out of them.

wilderz...what the hell dude? Pearly...those of us who were in Health Care know what you're going through...and frankly what you're talking about! I'm not a nurse, but I work in admitting at the hospital. I get yelled at all day because we don't do things the way people think we should...heaven forbid we follow state and federal & medicare laws!!! Today...the next person that yelled at me or told me, "I didn't have to do this last time" was gonna get it in the kisser! I hope you have a better week despite all the stuff you have going on!

Meh, in my past life I ran an organization full of college professionals and non college peons. I didnt cut their internet or perks. In my opinion employees, especially professionals, are paid for a skill set and their contribution. Not for hours on the clock. I had to have faith that the people I hired were of high character. If ever I felt the need to babysit by doing things like internet, then I would have felt I didn't do a very good job as the boss. The longer the tenure /higher the education, the more room I allowed to make their own right decision. 99% of the time, they do. It isn't necessarily the pay, but the other intrinsic things that go along with a position that make a person feel valued.

My sister has worked in a nursing home for 20yrs now. I have heard and seen the things she and her associates go through. Nurses are under-appreciated workers. If not for yens Doctors would have to go back to personally treating patients, patients would have to wait for Doctors to get around to them and by that time complications can set in. Doctors maybe seen as the brains but with out Nurses(the nerves of the system) nothing would get done right.

Wilderz, that was unwarranted. You could have found a different way to say what you did without coming off like a complete dickbag.

My mom was a nurse when I was growing. She also made license plates (we had 7 kids and we needed the money). She had cuts all over her hands, sore back, sore feet, worked long hours - including Christmas and other important family occassions. I appreciate how hard these people work and a lot of them do it because they generally care about people. I want my health care workers to be happy, to have stress outlets, to be able to manage bills, and check on their kids via email, stay connected to friends via facebook...or 2o2p etc. They do gods work and sacrafice a lot of themselves to do it. I also would like patients to be able to stay connected with family and friends and have a stress outlet when they are in time of crisis and feeling disconnected and scared and the internet can provide that. Internet connectivty is a large part of how people communicate and stay connected with friends and family. Not having internet is like not having phone or visitation access - it is key to communication. I also want my health care professionals to have compasion for others....some in this thread don't seem to have that...
