Shared on Wed, 07/06/2011 - 07:37We have to be at the hospital at 5:30 am for a 23 hour "observation" admission for the man's back surgery. Can you imagine? Times have changed so much. He has had all of his pre-op stuff done outpatient, including his "shower and scrub" which we do at home the night before. The surgery is actually done with the intention that he will go home within 23 hours and not have to be admitted to the hospital. It is considered outpatient surgery. If he is admitted to the actual hospital, he is transferred sometime during the day. Weird.
If he has any amount of blood loss, they will place a drain. He will have IV narcs for pain control. All of that will be discontinued and he will be sent home THE NEXT DAY if there are no complications. WTF? This is back surgery! The spine, ya know!!?! Well, I know I can take better care of him at home than the nurses at the hospital can, but what it all comes down to is insurance. Hospitals are a business. Don't let them even begin to fool you into thinking they are a place to have treatment and recover for any amount of time. It's all about money. Well, he is safer at home anyways. None of those nasty hospital acquired infections to worry about.
So, keep us in your thoughts, please.
