I'm using Windows Vista now and I wanted to stream some .wmv files to the 360 directly by using Windows Media Player 11 (without using media center).

I was struggling with this until I found a post in the xbox forums detailing how to do this.  Turns out the 360 gets "locked" into using windows connect (if you've ever set it up before).  You have to force the 360 to drop the connection to your PC and then set it up again.  This is accomplished via the "System" blade in the dashboard.

Disconnect:
System->Computers->Windows Connect (IIRC - my screen is different now that I've disconnected).

Reconnect:
Media (Blade)->Video->Computer->Yes, Continue

That's it!  You also have to share the files out from WMP11, but that's a whole 'nother topic.

This works for .wma, .wmv, .mp3 and possibly some other formats.

It does NOT work for DivX, XVid, .mpg, .avi .....

C'mon MS!  You are SOOOOO close to having a premier media center in the living room, why hold out on popular formats just because it's NIH?  Especially ones so highly used in people camera (.mpg/.avi).
