Shared on Sun, 10/05/2008 - 15:09I think I'm just prone to injury anymore. It seems no matter what I'm doing, at some point I wind up with a freak injury (not always serious) that could happen to no one but me.
My most recent? What seems like either a sprain of my left (fret hand) index finger, or some nasty tendonitis in there. This just flared up this morning. I'm thinking it was a case of poor warming up Friday night when I practiced with my band and even worse warming up when I was practicing yesterday. I would think at this point I wouldn't need to warm up for 15 minutes, that a good 5 minutes would get my old joints limbered up. Guess not.
This is frustrating because right now I really want to play. I've been making strides in improvement over the last month that you can almost see week to week and I want to keep it going. Right now I'm afraid to play today in favor of resting the finger, but I'm also afraid 1 day wouldn't help, or even 2. I don't want to go more than 2 days without playing. Ah well, we'll see what happens I guess. It just sucks anymore that I get these dumbass injuries seemingly out of nowhere.
Speaking of band practice this past Friday, wow did that go well. We've been focusing on original material and I came up with a couple twists on the bass lines for the songs I learned already. When I played them for the guys Friday, they absolutely loved them and were actually quite enthusiastic about my playiing in general. Considering my lack of confidence in general with playing, that was quite a boost for me. Then they taught me parts of a couple other songs, including a ballady type song, and right off the bat I was coming up with bass lines that fit like a glove and even did some runs that sounded badass. I was surprising myself, to be honest...it was like it was just flowing naturally from my fingers without thinking about it. So now of course my finger is hurt. Bah.
It was fun too because I had the kid in tow, and he was set up in another room playing XBox but he could still hear us and he was even going on about how good we sounded as a band in general. Fun times ahead, it seems. We're looking right now at 3 originals we have down plus there were parts of 3 others we went over, probably 2 of those we're going to add. We're going to do some covers too and that should give us about an hour set, give or take. Right now I think 2 of the guaranteed covers we're going to do are Megadeth's version of Anarchy and Back in Black. We might do Keep on Rocking in the Free World as well, thats up to the guitarist. I think he was leaning in favor of it though.
Oh, and my buddy at work...the drummer who convinced me to get back into playing...is going to have some free Saturdays coming up for me and him to jam, just the 2 of us. I'm kind of excited about that because we haven't played together since March, when I had been back playing less than 2 months. I'm looking forward to it because I've improved a lot since then and it should be a good time.
Anyway, back to my Sunday...the kid is getting ready to go back to his mom's and the White Sox will be playing in a minute. Time to go.
