Shared on Sat, 07/30/2011 - 08:24Finally have a weekend with my son for the first time since late May. He's going into his senior year and has been swamped with wrestling and football camps, and with him living 150 miles away its been tough to find a weekend that worked. As much as I wanted him to visit I didn't want to force him to miss out on things that would benefit him in the longrun so we just bit the bullet. Fortunately the family he's staying with were able and willing to get him up here this past Wednesday night, so its been a good last couple of days.
Way back when I did the workout thing I would take him to the gym with me, but our company parted ways in the daycare center. He was all of 4 or 5 back then, so we always said that "one of these days" we'd work out together. Well "one of these days" has been the last few days, and its been a lot of fun. I got him some guest passes at the gym I go to for Thursday and yesterday. We got up early (normal time for me) to get in there. Thursday we worked out together on the back and biceps routine. Best time I've ever had in a gym, hands down. I'm really proud of how he's taken to the lifting, and in all honesty the kid is huge. I'd set him up on a workout routine for him to do on his own before football lifting started as well as a diet and he's been sticking to both with great results. Friday was a bench day for him and shoulder day for me, so we did our own things then but still checked in with each other. I was really proud seeing him take to the weights and workout like he knew what he was doing. And for the record, one of us was a bit more tired than the other on the day we worked out together. :)
He has to go back on the early train tomorrow since the later trains were sold out, but we should be able to get one more weekend in before football starts. Then its football and wrestling back to back, and the visitation drought truly begins. Might get some time in for the holidays but otherwise I won't see much of him until late February/early March. This whole distance thing sucks, it always has.
As far as the workout thing goes, still hanging in there and doing well. I'm down 12 pounds in the 3 weeks since I started so thats encouraging. I'm also seeing gains in building up muscle, but I have a long way to go...believe me on that. I figure that by Halloween the changes should be noticable, and I would say that by next summer I should be close to the results I'm looking for. Just gotta keep working at in the meantime and be patient.
