Shared on Mon, 11/07/2011 - 08:14So I had a blog posted and went back to edit something, and apparently I can't tell the difference between the EDIT and DELETE button. Ah well.
Remember how I blogged the other day about not having had a gout flare up for a few months? Guess what was waiting for me when I woke up this morning. Yep, a nice big collection of uric acid crystals on the ball of my foot between my big toe and second toe. Hurts like a motherfucker. And of course it totally sabotaged my workout this morning. Every time I would plant my foot for support it would hurt, and that in turn would distract me. It crushed my streak of a couple weeks running where all my workouts have been outstanding, and to be honest I'm kind of aggravated about it.
And forget cardio. I tried the treadmill but even at a reduced speed it was obvious that 35 minutes of a forced limp would only yield a back injury, so I shut it down and tried the bike. I couldn't even pedal without pain so I just left. I took some alleve before the gym and I'm about to take some more in a minute, then maybe I'll ice it or run the foot under warm/hot water for a bit. Hopefully this is a quicky flare up, half a day and done. On the plus side I know what caused the flare up, and I have never been able to pinpoint a cause before.
Saturday I was doing some grocery shopping and I need a change of pace from the albacore, but I didn't want to outright cheat; I just wanted something that didn't taste like fish. So I found this sliced pepper beef that was low in fat and carbs and high in protein, so I picked up 8oz and had that for dinner. And there you have it folks, the culprit. Fuck you, pepper beef. True (and maybe disturbing) story: I keep a journal of my workouts, I write down every movement, every set with reps and weights. At the end of the list, once I finish my cardio, I write down what I did and for how long. In today's entry for cardio I wrote: "No cardio - gout. FUCK YOU GOUT!".
I also note a start and finish time for the lifting portion of my workout. The workout I did today, chest and triceps, normally takes about 50 minutes. I added 4 sets of something so there was going to be a slight increase in time anyway, but because I was struggling with the pain the overall workout took 15 minutes longer than normal. That sucked. But to paint a silver lining on this cloud, today was my weekly weigh-in and I'm down another 1.5lbs from last Monday.
For kicks I have a pic of the bottom of my foot. I'm not imbedding because my feet are gross lol, but if you want to see what a gout flare up looks like have at it:
