American Elitism

I'm listening to AM sports talk on my way home from work the other day and I got to listen to some guest host's take on the World Baseball Classic.  He stated he liked it not for the US to do well in it, but for the more pure, fundamental form of baseball.  He argued that the other teams in the classic play a better brand of baseball and that the US has gotten sold on power and flash, and that the US has forgotten how the game should be played.  The response was a tirade of how he's an idiot, to go to Japan, GTFO, etc.

I happen to agree with the fact that many of the fundamentals have disappeared from many of the sports because athletes have become such better that they can rely on talent alone. Many times they may never have to be as fundamentally sound due to the fact they can dominate at such a young age.  Why does this idea of the pampered US athlete apply to baskeball and not other sports?

I just get sick of "some" attitudes that prevail that the US kicks ass for the sake of kicking ass.  This applies to so many areas beyond sports as well.  It has become too much the norm that people don't have to take responsibility for their actions... and its a wonder many countries have an negative attitude towards the US.  Have you seen the pompousness/ignorance of many?  Maybe the dumbest are just the loudest, but its scary... then again, maybe I'm just getting old.  I'll still be the first one to root for the United States in everything, but it will be in hopes they do the best, not just that they are the best.

Americans embrace their athletes to god status almost. NBA has gotten so out of hand in the recent years, the players think they can do whatever da hell they want. This is why I prefer college basketball. Some form of purity still remains with the players as most of the time they are not tainted by fame beyond their school ground. We kick ass in basketball during the Olympics because our players play that as a profession, in other countries the players play in "after work leagues". Not all of them, but most of them do. It's almost unfair. I do not take any enjoyment in watching basketball during the Olympics for that reason. When the Winner is so easily predicted. It takes away from the sport. I saw your comment about me being upset with Wisconsin winning. It was nothing but a sarcastic joke.. but heck.. those games were fucking great. Sitting at the edge of your seat not knowing who will win. Now that's what sports should be about.

Are we watching the same Olympics here? The US winning has ceased to be a foregone conclusion. PS Great post--what have you done with the real Ptrain?

Kitten, I just thought your comments may have been derogatory towards Wisconsinites. You're right though, the purity of sports has been lost due to the almighty dollar. I do wonder how an Asian manager would do in the MLB... I for one, would love to see it and what type of players they would have. Players are beginning to make an impact, I'd like to see some in managerial/owner positions as well in the MLB... however, I think they are happy with the purity in their leagues overseas and wouldn't want to deal with the prima donnas and negative press attitudes. MTK, I actually can make an intelligent comment, I just choose not to and observe behaviors. However, I normally like to talk stupid and have fun. I just get pissed at ignorance that is spouted by the loudest voices that seem to have the littlest thought behind it.
