The problem now comes after 2007. The lineup for 2008 is looking mighty slim for the 360 with no really big hype builders other than Lost Odyssey announced. Coming out of E3, I was under the impression that MS was planning on making X07 the launching pad for information about the 360's future however now comes word that it's been effectively cancelled, with a UK-centric event being planned instead.
Sure there are a couple of other big shows coming. Leipsig and TGS mostly. However in the past these usually aren't big events for MS, and are definately not events where they take center stage like X06 had been.
Sony holds Gamer Days where the media gets to see all the new and upcoming PS3 stuff and those tend to be big hits with the media. MS, who is well regarded in keeping the public informed and updated with the goings on, have no such platform in order to take the stage and instead choose to fight for the spotlight with Sony and Nintendo in these mega-events.
MS can't keep resting on Halo to make the system. They need to build hype on upcoming titles. Even if you only drop a title and a half-dozen screenshots. They need to keep the public salivating and expecting the next big thing. I believe that the only nugget we have heard about is some sort of big surprise for the Fall Update.
Take a cue off of your own E3 2006 press conference MS. Don't be afraid to build hype past 2007. Show people that the 360 is here to stay for the long term and not just for what's in store for Holiday 2007.
