I started using them because of an erratic work schedule where we can sometimes finish our shift, then have to be back and in uniform 7 hours later...sometimes more, sometimes less. The pills are advertised as being non habit-forming, and they are so long as you keep their use under control. Let it get out of hand and you'll end up using them every night and find that over time they don't seem to be as strong as they used to be.
If anyone is just thinking of trying them out, IMHO, I'd suggest to just tough it out and to stay away from the pills. But if someone's going to try them out as a last resort, start out with the normal dose, skip the maximum strength pills. You won't need it that strong. I started out with those cause they were cheap and figured it'd work better than the normal dose only to find out it was too strong...had a difficult time trying to drive to work the next morning, like driving drunk. Then of course, you get used to the high dose and need more for the same effect.
The 2 main chemicals I've seen used are diphenhydramine hcl and doxylamine succinate and they both seem to work equally well. They are also in other things like nyquil and benadryl.
Yeah, I know this wasn't very organized and put together, but that's just how my mind works. (Think of that ADD commercial with the lady in a business meeting and her thoughts are like channel surfing a TV...lol) So basically, I'd recommend using sleeping pills as a last option and lump those together with lunesta and the other sleep drugs. Or you'll end up like me, typing out a blog entry at just about 5am...and yes, I just cheated...I took a motion sickness pill because right now I'm not really that tired and I should be sleeping.
