THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PAST

For some reason this year, I don't know if it's age or what, I've been drifting back in the past. I am the youngest of 9 children. No, Mom and dad didn't have cable. They both loved the season but both seemed to forget the madness involved with that many people in the house. Yelling kids, fights, running through the house, stealing cookies. And that was just what I done, remember there were 8 more. As each one left home things simmered down somewhat. It was cool not having to share my bed or steal a cookie. Not to mention I had the bed to myself and the line to the bathroom was much shorter..We had only one of those you see. Dad never pastored a "mega church" like we have today so money was always tight. Just about the time I got used to the slower pace, THEY ALL STARTED COMING BACK! Time out Show me where this is allowed in the rulebook. Not only did they come back, they brought more with them! Who are these snot-nosed brats that's calling a 13 year old boy uncle? And who thought I'd be happy to give up my bed for the floor or the couch? Why wasn't i called for that meeting? Every heard of a hotel you cheap bunch of $^%&*!&*!(!(!(!!!!! To be honest, neither Mom or Dad would've allowed that. Now I've given up my bed, I've been moved to the kid's table, and no longer have the private space of my room. All thought it was wonderful to have everyone back together again, except for yours truly, the dog and the cat. This went on for eons it seemed like before things started to slow down. Mom and Dad used to say they missed those days but were glad at their age they no longer had all the work of it. I'd keep my mouth shut and thank God for the peace and quiet. Now all these years later now that all are gone, (I lost my last brother 7 years ago when he took his own life), I"m haunted to by the Ghostly sounds of Christmas past and the wonder that the new fallen snow always seemed to bring. We can't go back or move forward, we only have the moment. I have a great life now that I wouldn't trade with anyone and a wonderful wife and family. I just wish I could travel back and bring some moments forward to share this one with us. By the way, thank you for sharing this moment with me as well. Peace out.

I hear you, man, though my situation is just the opposite. I'm the oldest of 3, and it was always just my immediate family at Christmas, (Mom, Dad [then later step-dad] brother and sister.) We never had Grandparents, aunts/uncles, cousins for the holidays. Now that I have a family of my own, I look forward to a nice quiet Christmas with my wife and kids. It never happens. The extended family is always there. My parents, her parents, my siblings... and everyone always competeing with who will host Christmas. I usually have to wind up being an ass and telling everyone that I'm not going anywhere, but then they all show up at my house. Now that my brother has a kid, I think it will start slowing down. He's done said he isn't going anywhere for Christmas, so I imagine everyone will be at his house, as he is better liked than me :) I just might get my quiet family Christmas this year. All that's going to be here is my Mother-in law, which I don't mind, and then my wife's aunt will be here for the weekend, but at least she won't be here on Christmas. Wow, that turned out to be a lot longer than I had planned. Sorry about that.

When I was a kid, I was an only child raised by my mother and grandmother, never spent a Christmas with my father. We had yearly get togethers with aunts, uncles, and cousin's every Christmas. My Grandmother passed about 12 years ago, and the family has only been together maybe 3 times since. Times change, people change, and thing's change, just hold on to the special memories of the past, and hope to make some for the future
