Irresponsible Journalism

I was watching Inside Edition, a show not well known for responsible journalism to begin with, so consider the source.  They were reporting on yet another video of a little girl being beat up by other girls for no reason.  Surprisingly, they're taking the high road, denouncing these acts.  I can't watch the videos, personally, not even the censored ones.  Unfortunately, they had an "expert" on these things who claimed (paraphrased) "clearly this [Melbourne, FL] beating is a copy cat.  This sort of thing was unheard of before [YouTube]."

How incredibly naive!  I saw fights like this break out in my schools growing up.  Sometimes guys, sometimes girls.  Violence is not something new because of the Internet, YouTube, or video games.  Human nature is violent.  To evolve, you have to overcome your baser instincts constantly.  If anything, these violent girls are being caught with evidence.  The more these girls/guys get caught because of a YouTube the less likely they are to be caught on tape.

People have a twisted view of humanity by viewing thru nostalgic, rose colored glasses.  Here some things that have been happening since humans were considered sentient:  murder, child abuse, violence, war, drugs, and sex.  I HATE it when people, especially older ones, claim "well I certainly didn't do THAT when I was your age, and neither should you."  But they did have premarital sex.  They did underage drinking.  They had both parents working to struggle with the bills.  Women worked!  I'm not sure where people get off saying things were better when they were young and we just didn't do those things.

I'm calling bullshit on this one.  I guess the point to all of this is to tune your bullshit meter and call "Shenannigans" when you hear blatant lies.  Things were not "better back then."  They were the same if not worse.

Yes, I got in a talk once with a friend of mines mom about how much better it was. Specifically about the divorce rate. Her opinion was that although there were less divorces back then, it was a net bad thing because all these women were trapped in bad marriages...abusive, etc and felt like they couldnt escape because of the limitations society imposed on divorced women. Had women felt empowered to leave terrible marriages back then the divorce rate would have been much much higher...Forget about the damage done to kids being forced to live with an abusive adult because nobody reported it...The openness we have now is a net positive over the "golden" age of leave it to beaver or whatever your particular picture of when it was perfect is. Nothing has changes in human behavior..we just know more about everyones dirty laundry.

Great post, I think you are spot on, the only difference is that everyone has camera phones now, and records this crap happening. Then it makes its way to youtube.
