The Bloodstorm ad was the controversy (second paragraph of the wiki page). They didn't mention it, but he used his Johnny Cage character, a Midway property, to endorse Bloodstorm, a non-Midway property. This ended his participation as Johnny Cage, which is fine since they went to polygons after MKIII. Oh yeah, he's not afraid to die, either.
