One of the complaints was that you play it just like Bejeweled. That's not entirely true, but if you don't like Bejeweled, this will probably be a bad title for you (either DS or PSP). You have to match gems that give you needed mana and take away your opponents. If you're trying to get red and yellow, and the opponent blue and yellow, yellow gems will be your priority. Green gems would be good to ignore in such a battle.
The RPG elements are a big deal. The majority of money and experience is gained matching money and experience icons in battle. In other words, you must take risks. Playing around with the armor, weapons, friends, and spells is very important to outclassing your opponent. At the beginning, not so much. Also, if you attack a creature with twice your hit points, you will probably lose in true RPG style.
