Zombie Shopping Mall Fun

Downloaded the demo of "Dead Rising" for the 360. So far it's a blast. I played through the level several times before dinner, my wife said she heard me giggling like a schoolgirl.

I love the open ended feel of the demo, you really just got to experiment and use different weapons/tactics on the zombies. The visuals were great, and the AI is different enough to make it fun. The zombies go from slow "shamblers" to some pretty quick lunging fellas. If you get surrounded, you will get chewed on.

The camera brings a unique element to the game, as it makes you look at the zombies as more than just fodder for the sweet new golf club you picked up. Trying to get a shot that frames a zombie with a lego mask, one chewing on a severed arm, one lunging at you, with one lying in the fountain struggling to get up is a challenge in itself. It does take a while to add up the points, so leveling up might be a challenge, but I'm looking forward to replaying the heck out of this game.

It kinda reminded me of Grand Theft Auto, in that I barely played through 1/3 of any of them before I just got bored and started whacking people with nightsticks and katanas for fun. Only now I don't have to feel bad about beating Grandma with a sledgehammer, as she's a rotting corpse set on chewing on my grey cells to "ease the pain of being dead" (anyone who gets the movie reference there gets some extra respect from me).

Can't wait for the retail version, comes out Wednesday, which just happens to coincide with a few days off for yours truly.

Whoohoo.

The game isn't actually open ended. It can be, but in 'story' mode you really need to follow the story line and get to where you need to be to make it progress. Reviews seem to indicate the story mode goes haywire if you get it off track.

Tank, I'd agree with that statement as I've played through some of the retail version. I didn't like the rigid story mode at first, but it seems like it's designed to reward replayability. The fact that I can restart the game and not lose the leveled character makes a lot of sense. I wish more games had this feature. I'd love to play through KOTR with a fully leveled Jedi, just to kick the crap out of those friggin nitwits in the Hutt tourney!
