Initial Portal Impressions....

For those of you who aren't aware: Orange Box was released last night. This pack of gaming goodies comes with 5 games in it. One of them was the puzzle game: Portal.
This morning I figured I would play a little Portal before I came into work just to see how it worked.

45 min later I had already plowed through to level 16....out of 19. Hrm. I was thinking the puzzles would get a bit more challenging a lot quicker. The last couple took a few moments but they weren't exactly mind bending. Hopefully the last few will really tweak my noodle. Also I noticed that there are some bonus levels that seem to be locked. Hopefully those will offer some more gameplay after the first 19 are finished.

The game itself is a fantastic idea. You start at point A and you need to get to point B. Getting to point B involves using a gun that creates 'portals' in the wall. You can create portals pretty much anywhere (except on these special anti-portal walls) so you can create your entry/exit points at will. Obstacles include pits of deadly goo, mechanical drones, and the usual "put a block on these buttons to open a door" puzzles.

The commentator who is "observing" you is freaking funny. You'll be looking around the room and contemplating your next move when it busts out some random comment. Good stuff to keep an otherwise slow-paced game a bit 'random'.

The game retails for $19.99 by itself but I wouldn't suggest just buying it alone. Shell out the extra $30 and get 5 great games :)

I figured Portal would be short, but I'm definitely looking forward to playing it. I bought orange box for TF2 (worth the price alone), and the other shit are just "freebies" as far as I'm concerned... :) D

They need to add a portal gun to TF2.

I played to level 15. You are right, the puzzles aren't that hard. Hopefully there will be expansions and user made levels. The idea is cool.
