I woke up to.....

Durty crying and freaking out saying that Comet our Dalmation had killed one of the puppies and was eating it......I throw some clothes on run downstairs, and there is comet, with the little black boy "shortbus" the one we were going to keep.....in her mouth, I had to pull it out of her mouth only to find it with its head gone......I look at the rest of the puppies, and the one with the spots on his face, that my son was going to get, was motionless, while the other 7 are freaking out.

Comet jumps in with the puppies and tries to cuddle, tackle....somthing, I throw her out of the box, she goes after the carcass again, I grab her, throw her in the blazer.....and she is no longer here.  We disposed of shortbus, Hawk, the one my son was going to get, is alive, but appears to have a broken neck, hardly any movement.  The other puppies are fine.  And our final decision is to take them to our CARE center, its a no kill shelter, that will help find homes, and help Hawk out.

What a lovely weekend this is turning out to be

OMFG, that is crazy. Sorry to hear you are starting off the weekend that way. From what I hear, dogs can experience postpartum depression. Maybe she was going through that.

That sucks, sorry to hear about the little ones. That is not something I would want to find first thing in the morning to start a weekend.

So did you ole yeller her or somethin'? Any dog that does that should be put down immediately...away from the kids of course. Sorry, I'm just not a dog person.

Whatever you do, DO NOT listen to TheCarnivalAngel's advice. It is uninformed to say the least. Most experts say the reason a mother eats the heads of her puppies is that she may have sensed some defect which would lead them to lead a sickness filled life. They are animals and react by instinct, not thought. Another reason is confusion. Birth is painful (obviously) and sometimes the dog doesn't understand what happened and before she has time to get used to pups she kills them. PLEASE do not get rid of your dog, you'll regret it later. It's nature, not her. She is not dangerous, or sick, just an animal.

Very often mothers will eat wounded or hurt young, usually not as old as those but if this is her first litter instinct could of gotten confused, also if there are too many puppies and she felt she simply cant provide for them all, boom again instinct. 9 is alot o pups and without you guys more than half probably would have already been dead

She did...she spanked me with a bitcher knife so if I moved I'd get cut. But fuck that shit. I hate fucking dogs. Sorry, just never liked them. Wait, what am I sorry for?

yep. dogs will sometimes eat their young. there are several reasons, but it's pretty hard to determine which reason triggered this specific time. it's not exactly "normal" behavior, but it also is.

Yes it seems wrong but it is "natural".Try not to punish the mother. Dogs are a gift to mankind TheCarnivalAngel has really missed out on some wonderful life pleasures.Dogs are the only animal I know that just give love unconditionally and require very little in return.
