Shared on Thu, 08/31/2006 - 11:50I seem to have a knack for attracting tropical storms and hurricanes whenenver I go somewhere on vacation. Now let me preface that for any complaint I may have here it is NOTHING like living in an area that is hit with one of these storms. While it can have an effect on my time off, it is nothing in comparison to losing a home or living through something like Katrina.
That being said, let me go through the quick history. My family owns a vacation home in the Florida Keys and my father thought it would be great to plan a trip for just the two of us to spend some time together. Flights are booked, the day is coming closer (October of 2004 I believe) and a hurricane begins to develop in the tropics. Flight cancelled and vacation plans called off.
So after that problem, we decide let's plan for June of 2005 since the chance of a storm is slim. Get on the plane, fly down and a tropical storm changes direction and hits us in the keys. The day I fly home the skies end up being clear and the ocean is nice and calm.
Now we come to the beginning of my upcoming vacation next week. Ernesto is brewing and while it won't be a "tropical storm" when it moves into my area, it will be dumping a ton of rain in Pennsylvania and Jersey (the two places I'll be). I almost get the feeling that if I changed and traveled to Nebraska it would follow suit making sure to keep me company on my trip.
I am hopeful that after the storm passes I will get a nice week of sunshine to sit out at the beach. No matter the weather, the important thing will be spending quality time with my family.
Hopefully this hurricane season will come and go without any unfortunate incident for anyone. As for future LANs (I hope you will not exclude me...) or your own vacations, you may want to make sure I won't be in the area before you confirm your plans.
