Okay, it’s been awhile. Between work and dealing with minor flood damage, business trips, and watching movies, I haven’t made time for much else. Speaking of movies, I’ve recently seen Rambo, Catacombs, The Strangers, and Cloverfield.

Catacombs “stars” Shannyn Sossamon as Victoria, who goes to Paris to visit her sister. Her sister drags her to a party in the underground catacombs beneath Paris where Victoria promptly gets lost following the completely expected death of her sister. Most of the movie has Victoria wandering around pointlessly, made even worse by the crappy camera work. Supposedly, the Catacomb set is a direct replica of the real catacombs of Paris, but it’s hard to tell. There’s about three minutes toward the end that involves an okay twist, but otherwise this movie is one to stay away from.

I started watching Cloverfield with pretty low expectations. The few people I had talked to about it said it was pretty bad. Reviews on the movie were mixed. The previews for the movie were okay, but then I heard the previews were the best parts. To me, the movie looked like it was going to be a mix of “Godzilla” and “The Blair Witch Project.” Fortunately, it was much better then “The Blair Witch Project.” The plot is pretty simple, but enjoyable. A monster attacks New York and a small group of friends are trying to escape the destruction while filming the events on a handheld camera. In this instance, the jerky camera work that failed miserably in Catacombs works well in this movie. It starts off kind of slow, but quickly picks up the pace about twenty minutes in.

There’s not much to say about Rambo. It had a good amount of gore, but you take that away and there just isn’t anything redeeming about it.

The Strangers had a lot of potential gone to waste. I knew the movie was in trouble when the first scene that attempted to be scary had me laughing out loud. There were a couple of tense moments, but nothing that really makes you jump out of your seat.
