I figured I would share my all time favorites here. Most of my favs are fairly recent shows, but I didn’t watch much T.V. when I was younger. The shows on my list are ones that I could watch the rest of my life and wouldn’t mind if they were the only shows on T.V.
10. The Simpson’s
It’s been on 18 years and it’s still funny as hell. It’s hard to remember television without The Simpson’s. Some of the best quotable T.V. has come from Homer. Such as, “It’s not that I don’t understand. It’s that I don’t care.” (Homer to Lisa).
“Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try.”
“Look, the thing about my family is there's five of us. Marge, Bart, Girl Bart, the one who doesn't talk, and the fat guy. How I loathe him.”
And my personal favorite,
“Here's to alcohol, the cause of—and solution to—all life's problems.”
9. Mythbusters
This show has made me a wiser person…and Kari Byron is about the sexiest geek alive.
8. Dungeons and Dragons
I’m not ashamed to admit I loved the game and the cartoon. For a short period of time, this show guaranteed I would be out of bed on a Saturday morning.
7. Friends
This is one of two shows where every episode has caused me to laugh out loud. I’m not talking about a little chuckle. I’m talking about gut-wrenching laughter that brings you to tears. I still watch the repeats and will usually laugh just as hard as the first time I watched it.
6. Alias
This first time I ever watched Alias was on DVD about a year after the show had been cancelled. I didn’t really have any desire to see it, but a coworker kept insisting that I watch it and let me borrow the first season. From the first 15 minutes of the pilot episode to the closing credits of the final show, I was hooked. Some say the show lost its appeal after the second season, but for me there was rarely a low point. I thought the series finale was about the best finale a show has ever come up with. It tied up the loose ends and left you feeling satisfied.
5. Lost
Sure, this show leaves you with more questions then it answers, but that’s the appeal. I love a show that lets you speculate for a while before revealing its secrets.
4. Firefly
Best described as a sci-fi Western, this show was smartly written with awesome dialogue and a deep plot. Had it lasted more then one season it could have easily been my all time favorite.
3. Mystery Science Theater 3000
It’s a show where a guy and some puppets make fun of bad movies. This description, while accurate, give the impression the show is either something really dumb or something only a kid would enjoy. The truth is that the comedy in this show is some of the most brilliant and smart comedy ever written…mixed in with sheer goofiness. I’ve laughed so hard during moments of this show I’ve had to pause the program because I was afraid I would literally pass out from laughter. Some of my favorite episodes are “Devil Doll,” “Manos: Hands of Fate,” “Space Mutiny,” “I was a Teenage Werewolf,” and “Pod People.”
2. Angel
Usually when a show spins off from another show it tries to reinvent itself. “Angel” stayed true to the Buffy universe while offering it’s own unique style. This show is only number 2 because it’s a spin off, but I think it was every bit as good as it’s predecessor…
1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
I have to admit, I was obsessed with this show. My sister and I would spend hours discussing and dissecting it. This show was more then a hottie kicking vampire ass. It had great storylines and the wittiest dialogue ever. Even though it had its comedic moments, at its heart the show was dark and went to emotional places that most shows don’t even attempt to go. The episode “Passion” in season two is hands down my single, favorite episode of any show, period.
Speaking of hotties…
