Scary Story of the Day.

It ain't that that scary but it is true. Friday I was looking forward for coming home early, hooking up my piece of junk boat to my truck and heading to the river with 3 buddies to drink beer and catfish all night. About 2:00 I get a call at work and figure it's my wife as she's called 5 times in the last 30 minutes for something or other. Anyway, she's in a panic "Get home now." Our oldest boy had cut his leg. She's not know for being a port in a storm so I ask to talk to the boy myself. He's 9 and I can tell 2 sentences in that he's in shock. "I could see my achilles tendon! I keep telling myself just to breath!" he repeats himself several times until I get it to my wife that she needs to take him to the emergency room.

I get home making sure they went (since I don't have a cell phone) and there's blood all over the front porch and a bag of trash laying on the sidewalk. 2 nights prior my wife had broken the plate that goes in the microwave and had thrown the pieces out. Apparently it was time to take the trash out and a piece of glass had reached out and bit my son.

I get to the emergency room and there's a lady there poking on his foot. "I don't see anything. Wiggle your toes. Now move your foot." Finally a young Indian doctor walks up behind her and says "Right here..." and points to a place in the cut she's opening with he thumbs. "Oh!", she exclaims, "Don't move your foot. The ortho surgeon will be down to look at it in a few minutes." We're feeling real good about right now but at least the lady isn't pressing on the wound any more.

The Ortho guy comes, lifts his leg, sees the cut and places his leg back down on the bed. "I'll know more when I get him into the OR." Great. So, he goes to the OR, gets put under and they go in to clean it out and repair any damage. All told he cut 90% of his tendon off. Week before school starts and he's suppose to keep all weight off it for the next 8 to 12 weeks.

I spent the weekend hooking up the old Xbox for him and his Uncle sent him a slew of used games for him to play. He got crutches but just can't seem to get the nack of them. He keeps throwing his foot forward before his body reaches the apex of the curve when moving his body forward. Since all his weight is still behind him he falls backwards. He's getting better but falls back about every 6th step. A buddy at work told me about a three wheel deal that you rest your knee on that has a bike break on it. He rolls along his hurt foot on that thing using the break when needed. We'll see if we need to look at alternatives in a couple weeks.

Yay! I watched 3 episodes of Smallville with the wife last night so maybe I'll get to try CiV4: Beyond the Sword tonight in between carrying the 85lb sack of meat I created to the bathroom.

That is scary stuff! It's bad enough to hurt yourself that badly, but when it is your kid, it really hits hard! Glad he apparently is going to be OK, but keep us posted!

That sucks for the little guy. I have a 5 yearold and one that will be 4 next month. I am just waiting for an accident to happen. They are both rough and I just know it is a matter of time before we have to go to the emergency room. Not looking forward to it.

That sucks man. My 6 year old son had a scooter wipeout 2 weeks ago and broke his collarbone. It's rough at that age -- especially during summer -- to be told that you're restricted in what you can do. Hang in there, and tell you little guy that there are some other dads out there that are thinking of him.

I appriciate it everyone. He's trooper but seems to be the one who always gets hurt. He had a scooter accident 2 years ago and cut off the tip of one finger, fell of the toilet watching daddy shave and cut the skin next to his eye requiring stiches and ran headlong into the dining room table leaving a mark. I'll tell the story of his unicorn scar from the .45 he fired back when he was 7 at a later date.

Man thats some scary stuff indeed. He really needs to stay off the foot for that tendon to fully heal. The new season of Smallville should be real interesting with Bizaro superman and Supergirl.
