Beer Club Round 2 Results

Round 2 is complete. There were some very good beers in this round. More good ones than round 1, and hopefully not as many as pending round 3.

I had trouble picking my favorite 3. I gave the Stone a nod over Rogue's Dead Guy Ale only because it had a slightly better marketing ploy with its "you're not worthy" gimmick. Both were excellent. All of the European offerings were delicious.

New Belgium: Fat Tire Amber Ale
Stone: Arrogant Bastard
Red Hook: ESB

The biggest disappointment was the Holy Grail Ale. Based the Monty Python packaging, I was expecting something outrageous. Nothing on the packaging said anything about the beer's style. I think it was a mild. On its own, it was an ok beer. My expectations severely dampened the experience.

I had no trouble picking my least favorites. I'm discovering there are a few beer styles that I enjoy considerably less than most. They include almost any beer with fruit in the name, old ales or barleywines, and many Belgians. These might be excellent beers that I just couldn't bring myself to enjoy.

Blue Dawg: Wild Blue Blueberry Lager
Weyerbacher: Merry Monks
Unibroue: Moudite

I'm a little baffled by Belgians. One of my top three from round 1 was a Belgian.   Merry Monks is a Belgian. Most have been in between the two. I can't find a pattern. So I'm not sure if there is a Belgain yeast strain I don't like, or if it's fermentation technique, or if it's the common addition of candied sugars. Beats me. I refuse to give up.

All beer is good.  Some is just better than others.

Lambics are Belgian right? That's probably the only beer I won't even try any more because I have never found one I like. Arrogant Bastard is great--I've only had it at beer festivals though so my judgment might be tainted.

You can't go wrong with a Leinenkugel. I have never had one that I didn't really enjoy.

First, you're crazy. Belgians are the best! Pardon my nitpick... Fat Tire, while brewed by "New Belgium", is not really in the Belgian style. It is more of a typical amber ale. That being said, my guess is that your aversion to Belgians is a combination of all the things you list. If you don't like the Maudite, you probably won't like any of the other Unibroue's. I'm pretty sure they use that same, distinctive yeast for all of their beers. Once again, nice haul!

I love Newcastle, it's in my top 5. As for Belgian; I always enjoy a Hoegaarden.

@Mike: Lambics are Belgian sour beers. They are made with both wild yeast and wild bacteria, kind of like the sourdough of beer. They are often made with fruits. Not had one yet. Only read about them. @Claude: Agree on Fat Tire. It's an American amber ale. A tasty one. I've rated the Belgians from sucks ass (Merry Monks tripel) to fully erect (Chimay red). They confuse me, which is not hard to do. Perhaps round 3 will provide enlightenment. Leinenkugel classic amber is pretty good. So is Hoegaarden. Had a Newcastle at happy our just before the MW2 midnight release. Beer is good.

maybe it't the style.. I know Chimay is a Trappist style, but don't know what that means. :(
