Beer Escapades - Adventure III

When I told our IT consulting dude, Dick, I was going to brew me some beer, he had an epiphany. Seems Dick knows a guy who knew a dude who used to drink with a guy who ran a beer club. Dick was suddenly inspired to do the same thing.

He (we) recruited a total of 24 people to be in the club. Members picked a beer that they wanted to try. Dick went to his local beer distributor (this is PA after all, and you can’t get beer at the grocery store or quickie mart) and purchased a case of each of the selected beers. He then unloaded each case onto the floor of his garage. Each box was then refilled with one of each of the 24 beers. Boxes were distributed among club members and the total cost was divided evenly 24 ways.

The beer store did not have all of our selections readily in stock. Dick ended up with the store manager discussing things like backorders and why we can’t get Fat Tire in our part of PA. The manager was very impressed with Dick. Dick was trying very hard to purchase about $1,100 worth of beer. I’d be very impressed by Dick too in this particular instance.

Once the manager figured out what the club was about, and that we hoped to repeat the ordeal again in a few months, the manager decided a discount was in order. He pitched back a buck a case, which was essentially one case of beer for free. Sweet. He also promised that if we sent him our list of selections a week or two ahead of time, he could find a way to get harder to find brands for us, including Fat Tire. Also very sweet.

So far I’m about half way thru this adventure. There have been a couple of surprises, the biggest of which was Stoudt’s American Pale Ale, brewed right here in PA. I figured it would be dull and light. Instead, it had a bold but pleasant flavor. It was delicious. As for disappointments, the two Belgian style entries from Ommegang Brewery, the Rare Vos and Hennepin both had an off sort of flavor. I didn’t care for either one.

My normally non-drinking wife has also been enjoying beer club. I’ve been enjoying these brews with supper. When I sit down at the table, I’ve been strongly encouraged to place my beer glass between our place settings so she too can sample. Another surprise, Mrs. Snuphy’s favorite was Weyerbacher’s imperial stout called Old Heathen.

These are the beers:

Beer club has been a ton of fun so far. I love trying new things. I also love beer. I really love trying new beers.

The Mrs. might like the Boddington's as well or even some Leinekugel. This is quite the dramatic departure from you r Nasty Light adventure.

what did you think of the Chimay? That is my favorite... the blue label is anyway. I didn't know it came in small bottles like that. Another favorites of mine is Ayinger. they have many kinds to choose from. The club sounds like a fun thing to do though.

I really liked Anchor's Steam beer, so I'm hoping their summer beer is still available next time we choose. I'd love to try it. I think the Mrs will like the Boddington's too. She has good (and expensive) taste in alcohol. She doesn't do bitter beer like many IPAs, but she definately likes a lot of flavor. I haven't tried the Chimay yet. I've been trying the ones I didn't expect to enjoy first, and leaving the goodies for last.. Chimay does in fact come in 12 oz bottles. At least the red and blue does. I'll have to look into Ayinger as one of my next choices. That would be new for me too.
