CoD: Who's Driving the Damn Bus

At this point, all are aware that Infinity Ward and Activision were screwing each other’s nasty for years. AV got fed up since billions of dollars of revenue truly doesn’t represent a quality reach around. So AV bitch slapped the living crap out of IW. IW is now FUBAR.

No one fucking cares. Despite the fact MW2 has a wide range of inexcusable flaws, MW2 remains the most played game on XBL. For those of us not playing MW2, the E3 afterglow is keeping us warm at night with the promise of Treyarch’s CoD: BO (one of the worst acronyms ever, or perhaps the best???). Everyone seems too distracted to look beyond holiday 2010 to consider the general health and well being of the CoD franchise. Not me. I need something to think about while I’m soaping myself in the shower. After beer and boobies, CoD seems to be the thing that really froths up the lather.

Let’s start with IW, the developer who would traditionally be slated to spew forth the next Modern Warfare offering in Nov. 2011. Courtesy of Kombo:

"When asked if Infinity Ward would continue to be a Call of Duty studio, Activision EVP of of studios David Stohl said, "We're not saying right now. There is definitely a strong shooter philosophy there, for sure. And I think that there's a short- and long-term view on the whole thing. But I think we're rebuilding a studio that can go off and build great new franchises in the future."

Bye, bye IW. I will remember your CoD games fondly. But your arrogance likely brought about your own demise, and possibly, the franchise’s along with it.

So if IW is out, then WTF happens in 2011? That’s an interesting question that doesn’t seem to be seeing much interest. But of course, Drunken Snuphylupagus is interested, and he and his proboscis have a theory.

Some folks might remember that AV set up a third CoD studio last year before the IW shit hit the fan. Sledgehammer Games was supposed to be developing a new CoD game in a different genre. Turns out, under the distraction of E3, Hammer has opened a brand new studio, lit up a brand new website, is hiring to the gills, and is “IN PRODUCTION ON A CALL OF DUTY FPS

So it seems that we will likely see a CoD issued in 2011 by a brand new studio with untested talents. Sound promising? Fuck no. Maybe the broken IW will collaborate. Sound promising? Fuck no. Treyarch, assuming they can even man up this year with BO to a level that can support the franchise, will not be able to turn around a title fast enuf to issue in 2011. There’s no way in hell AV will skip a year without issuing a title on the cash happy, CoD gravy train. There will be a CoD8 in ‘11. It will either be made by someone with no experience, by someone beaten nearly to death, or by someone who won’t have enuf time to make a game. Sound promising? Fuck no! The end of next year looks bleak for CoD. I’m saddened to realize that I already have one foot off of the CoD magic bus. But I don’t want to be on board when it crashes and burns.

You guys talk as if W@W was a bad game. It really was a good game, just in a tired genre. WW2 games are tired. But the MP maps were stellar. Besides MW2 is just a add-on to the MW engine. And it was glitchiet than hello. Let's not talk about the dropping of teammates or the need to yell turtle to back the party out.

@TKBosss: AV originally created the Sledgehammer studio to work on a new, unspecified CoD genre. It very well be an MMO FPS. That would certainly fit Bobby Kotick's vision to make CoD subscription based. I personally don't dig subscriptions. Gameplay might be cool. Or the concept could be a gimmick to use the CoD brand to suck more cash out of our pockets. Dunno. @Geekboy: W@W was definitely a good game. But W@W didn't establish itself as the backbone of the franchise like MW did. W@W was a fun interlude between MWs. It didn't need to deliver, even tho it did pretty well. BO, on the other hand, has to deliver. If it doesn't, what's left for the future?

Reach looks good and there will always be something new. There always is. Not to worry.

How tough was it for Treyarch to create W@W? Considering much the hard work was already done (they used the COD4 engine), all they had to do is make a new story and make new maps. Same thing with the new studio, I'm sure the COD8 designers will simply make a game with the MW2 engine.

@TDrag: I'm definitely looking forward to Reach. Halo just doesn't tickle my obsessive-compulsive button the same way CoD does. So far EA's stuff doesn't either. They're very fun distractions. I just don't find myself thinking about them in the shower.

May you find solace with the beer, boobies, and possibly another military FPS (MoH). You never forget the first game that really sucks you in. R.I.P COD

Wasn't AV shopping around the idea of an MMO FPS, for the COD Universe??? That might be what your looking at for Holiday 2011!!! I'll wait and see before passing judgement. Plus let's see what Respawn (West & Zampinella and half of IW) puts out which will probably be around Holiday 2011.
