One of my two big brothers developed a bug 5 or 6 years ago for offshore fishing. He’s been bugging his three siblings ever since to fish with him. Two previous times we’ve scheduled a day when we could all go. Both times, we traveled over 60 miles out to sea and got skunked. Even so, we had a blast both times. It’s great to spend a whole day with my brothers and sister stuck together in one relatively confined space. Two full days of laughs, two returns to the docks totally shit faced. Just no fish.
My bro said both times that it is highly unlikely that the fish will be available to meet our schedule. The way to do it is really to find out when the fish are running, and for us to run to the fish within the next 48 hours. So I got a call last Wed morning. The fish apparently hadn’t received the memo stating they were supposed to start their trek to Venezuela 3 or 4 weeks ago. We drove 4 hours after work, slept on the boat, and started a 2 hour boat ride before daylight. We fished all day in a fantastically beautiful environment, steamed 2.5 hours back to dock, took pictures, and drove 4 hours back home Thursday night. Very long day. Even longer since I woke Thursday morning with a fever.
Nonetheless, while we were way, way, way out of cell phone range, we found, made friends with, and let go six of these:
Big thanks to my brother. I don't have the means to attain this kind of experience on my own. He does, and wants nothing more than to share them with family and friends. He da' man!
