I was going about my morning routine with my 6 YO when we heard a rumble that could be felt inside our kitchen.
"That was a funny sounding truck that just went by", my daughter said.
I smartly added, "That must have been a BIG, funny sounding truck"
She went back to assembling a bowl of Cheerio's. I went back to guzzling caffeine. Five minutes later, my neighbor called. "OMG!! Was that an earthquake??" Noises, even big unexplained ones, don't normally make me think about large scale natural events or impending disaster. I don't live in a world renowned geological hot spot. And modern Man has the capability to make the earth shake. I blamed the event on one of the several, semi-nearby construction sites and moved on with my day.
Turns out my neighbor's paranoia was more accurate than my nonchalance. The bugger measured a whopping 2.9 on Richter's scale. I survived my very first confirmed quake. Pretty F'ing cool. There have apparently been more than 600 smaller rumbles over the last year or so in the same general location. Experts call that phenomena an earthquake swarm, which is even more F'ing cool.
