Makes Me Sick

Many of the large American companies that received billions of taxpayer bailout dollars by pleading that they didn't have enough money to lend to customers were, at the same time, spending millions of dollars dispatching lobbyists to influence the federal government.

A Washington Times review of lobbying disclosure reports found that 18 of the top 20 recipients of federal bailout money spent a combined $12.2 million lobbying the White House, the Treasury Department, Congress and federal agencies during the last quarter of 2008.

NEW YORK | Wall Street bonuses, a sore point as the government gives billions of dollars in bailout money to the financial industry, have apparently cost former Merrill Lynch & Co. CEO John Thain his new job at Bank of America Corp.

Mr. Thain resigned from Bank of America on Thursday following news that Merrill Lynch had rushed out its year-end bonuses, paying them just before Bank of America completed its acquisition of Merrill Lynch and sought $20 billion in additional government bailout money.

Makes me sick. Why are people getting bonuses for failing? WTF?

Our money, my money is going to these people. Where's my bailout? Oh, that's right, us poor people don't get one. Even though we are the ones that would benefit more then those companies.

Does everyone realize that Obama will only serve ONE term?  If he can't deliver on even half his promises, and the economy and what not has been turned around by the next election, he's out.  He'll be voted out like Carter was.

You may be right about Obama, but Roosevelt was voted into a THIRD term without delivering anything but hope and war. So maybe he will stick around for 8 years.

he will probably only serve one term and come through on half or more of his promises. We will also still be in or near the same financial situation we are in now since in most trends of cleaning up after a failed president it takes twice tha as long to straighten things to an even keel. If Obama can do it within his term (hopefully he can) then thank god he ran and the people for hopefully actually seeing him for more than just the younger, mentally intact alternative.

Paulson's Bailout Plan is the biggest swindle in history.

Silly Rabbit. You don't seem to understand. YOU do not have a lobbyist. You do not get a bailout. You get to PAY for the bailout.

I have never been a very avid proponent of oversight, but the lack of fact checking prior to releasing money and now the oversight of that money makes me very very sad. I should be angry, but I am too locked up in my own issues to have much anger anymore. I tend to the personality that most people are good at heart. As these things come to light, it just seems like so few good people are left in business.

This sounds naive and even a bit silly but I think the constitution needs to be rewritten and rewritten by the General Public, not by politicians, not by lawyers, not by companies. This will ofcourse never ever happen because certain things in America are held to such high esteem that changing such things is considered blasphemy but if you look at the way the system is abused, manipulated to benefit the ultra rich, there really is no other option.

Letting the hoi polloi write a Constitution would be hilarious. The average American can't even understand the details of his cel phone bill; the average American doesn't read. We need laws prohibiting lobbyists.

Thumbs up Soup. Anything we can do to bring these A-holes to accountability...keep it in the forefront.

We need to get the money out of DC. Public funding of elections. No lobbyists. No pork. Congress allocates funds to the various departments and the administration then runs the government. Congress is trying to be the Administration and the Courts and Everybody's Friend while lining their pockets.

Lobbying, at its core, is bribery, and it should not be allowed for public officials. Lobbyists should be publicly flogged, have a lengthy prison term (& not in a minimum security 'country-club' prison) and be forever barred from holding public office and/or approaching someone holding public office. After taking care of the lobbyists, send the congress critters and other public officials that received the lobbyists attentions to prisons (with the same type of after-prison permanent probation as lobbyists).
