The Media Hypocrisy

2 Murders these past few days, and 2 totally opposite reactions from the press for each.

The first, the murder of an abortion doctor by an anti-abortionist. It's all over the place. The paint brushes come out, and the act of one right-wing radical paints everyone who have similar beliefs.

The second murder, is that of a Marine who is home on leave, by a Muslim convert. Nary a peep is written or said. God forbid that the press condemns the act of any radical Muslim.

Here's a couple of paragraphs I read that put it best:

When a right-wing Christian vigilante kills, millions of fingers pull the trigger. When a left-wing Muslim vigilante kills, he kills alone. These are the instantly ossifying narratives in the Sunday shooting death of Kansas late-term abortionist George Tiller versus the Monday shootings of two Arkansas military recruiters.
Tiller’s suspected murderer, Scott Roeder, was white, Christian, anti-government, and anti-abortion. The gunman in the military recruiting center attack, Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad, was black, a Muslim convert, anti-military, and anti-American. Both crimes are despicable, cowardly acts of domestic terrorism. But the disparate treatment of the two brutal cases by the media is striking.

"Vigilante" is probably the wrong word for either of these murderers. What law, exactly, were either of them taking into their own hands? But, that's miniscule semantics compared to the overall context of the paragraphs.

It pisses me off. I guess that is one of the reasons I rarely watch national primetime news, or read "mainstream" newspapers. I get tired of the slant (in either direction *cough* Fox News *cough*).

Godspeed Pvt. William Long. Godspeed Dr. Tiller. Neither of them deserved to die in my opinion. But the treatment the media gave or didn't give them wasn't.

How can a person be anti-abortion and anti-government? Doesn't he need the government to enforce his desired anti-abortion policies? I would think that you could classify both murderers as anti-American but that they hate different aspects of the American nation.

@lost...ok, you got me with a generalization, but most of the press now is agenda driven. They ask questions and let their interviewee get away with not answering. They play games in the name of gaining "access". Yeah, there are a few good reporters who think critically and report completely.. But a very few.

Sometimes a murderer is just a murderer...not a political statement. But a reporter is always a douchbag. Nicely written. Thanks.

If it makes you feel any better, I haven't heard anything about either shooting. SC

Why exactly is a reporter "always a douchbag?"
