Shared on Fri, 05/09/2008 - 10:41So my role/position at work has changed significantly in the last week. For the last 8 months I have been functioning as a Business Developer for a small business in Oklahoma City. My primary responsibility was to find and win work for our government division. I've had a few successes and more than a few disappointments, but that's the name of the game when it comes to government work. Anyway, last week my boss hired a new employee to help me out. This guy has WAY more experience than I do and is doing a fantastic job so far. He has pretty much taken over the BD stuff, and that has allowed me to shift my role to that of Program Manager. So now, instead of going out to lunch with all kinds of high powered business folks, I sit in my office and create spreadsheets and reports, communicate with our employees and their respective government supervisors at various sites, and otherwise manage the day to day operations of our contract business. I do still have some responsibilitiews with regard to proposal writing, opportunity identification, and capture, but mostly it's just the new supervisory role that I have to deal with.
At first, I was a bit peeved that this guy came in and took over my spot, but now that I am in the PM role, I find that I am actually enjoying it. For one thing, there is a lot less pressure on me to "make the sale". I still get to do my lunches, etc with people in authority, but now they are customers not targets. It really makes the interaction much more pleasant. I also enjoy interacting with our employees in the field and getting their perspective on how things are going. They really give me insight into our work in a way no one else can. All of this information will eventually be used as part of our "lock strategy" to re-win our curent work when it eventually goes up for re-compete. Overall, the new role and responsibility is treating me pretty well. I guess sometimes a little change is a good thing.
Have a great weekend!
