Every once in a while...

Twiiter and Facebook deliver something interesting...(Most of the time not). I swear most days I'm ready to trash both of those accounts and become a social media crusty. And then someone like Hilskie comes around and posts that she flushed a frog down the toilet, so I decide to stay.

Anyway - I just saw this link from MajorNelson's twitter that concluded that gamers are about 35 years old, fat, and depressed. It goes on to say they have lower levels of extraversion, blah, blah, blah.

I'm 29 (almost 30 - eek), semi-overweight (except when I'm taking pictures standing next to MJ), and happy. I must be an anomoly. Do games make you fat, introverted and depressed? Or do the fat, introverted and depressed happen to like gaming?

None of the above. It's always obvious how these things get spun into conclusions. Time to get to the gym, start lying about my age when I hit 30, and hitting the Paxil.

given North America's generally over-weight population, and the current trend to prescribe anti-depressants to children as young as 3, I'm sure I could "study" almost any random collection of people gathering for most hobbies and determine that a significant enough portion of that segment is "over-weight, depressed and introverted".

I'm depressed, lazy, overweight, and a gamer..... I'm depressed because of work and politics I'm lazy because my job involves sitting in a little box and staring at a computer screen for 8 hours. I'm overweight because I am lazy. (and I LOVE food) and I'm a gamer because it is the best medium for entertainment.

I have a career, go the gym, play in some rec leagues and manage to have enough time to play with my son and wife and still game. I think the term "gamer" needs to be expanded to include us normal folk.

Stick your chest out, put your left hand on your hip, twist a little to the right. It hides the gut. :)

I have been to a few cons for gaming and I would think that 70% of the pop there were overweight...20 or more pounds over their ideal. Then again, those tend to attract the truly hardcore fanatics, so it might just be that subset of gamer pop. Overall, I think if you took 100 samples, the x-bar for gamer pop would resemble population µ.

Kinda an introvert, which sounds more manly than shy. So I am one of the three. Did Nelson mention that all male gamers have huge penises?

I've got half a dozen gamer friends from work. 20% are really overweight. When you average out the age you may get 35. A couple of us are 42 and a few are barely 30 or less. None of us are depressed. This is a better hobby for the introverts than serial killing. Gaming does not make people the way they are. They go to gaming because it fits who they are already.
