Opinion piece in the WSJ

"The Treatment of Bush has been a disgrace"

I've never understood how disagreeing with a person's opinion or a politician's policy makes it okay to personally attack and disrespect them. For 8 years celebrities like Jennifer Aniston have gone around calling Bush "a fucking idiot". Now I don't want to give the false impression that I think celebrity opinion is actually important, but it illustrates a point in that many Americans have been acting the same way for 8 years - even down to the bumper stickers that are downright saddening.

And then, if you actually defend against a slanderous or personal attack, suddenly you're on their side. I think that's why a lot of people keep quiet. What happened to respecting the person and disagreeing with the policy? Wait, let me back up. What happened to acknowleding that presidents are also human beings and are worthy of not being treated like trash on the street? What's with the "they have the hardest job in the world - they have it coming" attitude? Why not a "they have the hardest job in the world, give em a break" touch of sympathy?

I think it's sad how Bush is going to go out. I disagree with a lot (probably most) of his policy. I think we're going to have a far better president next year. And I think we would have had McCain won too. But I'll give Bush credit in that I think he put himself out there at face value. Most people don't have the balls to do that anymore, to be authentic. Right or wrong, HE believed he was doing the right thing. And 9/11 threw a presidential challenge that those before him didn't have to deal with. He was dealt worse cards than most presidents and few seem to acknowledge that.

Last night was fucking historic. I don't care who you are. I hope that Obama's oratory eloquence and iconic popularity at least give him the likability to have those that disagree - respectfully disagree. We're always talking about how damn divisive we are. If you compare American politics to the rest of world, we're astoundingly more alike ideologically than we are different. We just seem to bitch more about it. So anyone that is sad or contemplating moving to Canda, suck it up! You owe it to your country.

I'll quote the final words of the article in case you didn't read it....I think it's a good little bit of wisdom.

"Our failure to stand by the one person who continued to stand by us has not gone unnoticed by our enemies. It has shown to the world how disloyal we can be when our president needed loyalty -- a shameful display of arrogance and weakness that will haunt this nation long after Mr. Bush has left the White House."

I've said it before and I'll continue to say it: I cannot think of any other man I would've wanted in office when 9/11 hit other than President Bush. Presidency is more than just the warm fuzzy feeling they give you. It'll be interesting to see if Obama can prove that.

I became a huge fan of Carrie Underwood when she said she has no respect for celebrities that publicly endorse a candidate.

Good stuff Tara. I've found most celebrities to be uninformed and more opinionated than educated. But, that statement might also be true for most of America.
