Why...

Are cats such assholes when you're working from home?

Ugh. I talked to my boss yesterday and told him how much work sucks and that I want to stay home more often. I'm in week 5-ish of training the replacement that will assume my job after the headquarters move to Rhode Island this summer. It's challenging to have someone be your shadow for weeks on end. The boss agreed that it might be beneficial for me to be slightly "less available" so my replacement can start doing some of the work more independently while I am still around to be a lifeline. Because in 38 more days - I'm out! I can't wait.

I can't even begin to describe the feel of an office that is skeleton crew and imminently out of a job. It's actually not all bad, lol We have lots of happy hours and long lunches. I'm actually getting to know my coworkers much better than would be possible in the normal fast-paced, nose-to-grindstone environment we were all used to. I've really enjoyed that aspect of the job loss. The networking opportunities that will come out of this are incredible. I'm so going to miss working in downtown Minneapolis though...I'll probably be in downtown St. Paul next and it's just not as good. =(

I haven't bought my LAN ticket yet because I officially don't have my next job lined up. But - I'm *supposed* to have an offer "soon." I'm pretty sure it will work out. The opportunity is to work for someone I know and trust in a sort-of new company that will develop a healthcare tech product that doesn't exist. It has the potential to be really cool - but I'm staying quiet on details until it's for sure. So I've gotta wait on the Chicago excursion planning until it's all settled. In the very likely event that we make it, it will be my normal crew of Dean and Mark plus another couple that we game with all the time...We've already been joking about what ridiculous purchase might be made at Best Buy this year on a hungover Friday morning. 3D TV perhaps?

Oh - last note. I've been using a new controller for the last couple weeks. It has different thumbsticks that are convex rather than the standard concave thumbsticks. They look almost exactly like PS3 thumbsticks on an Xbox 360 controller. I had been using those little grip thingies on my Xbox controllers for quite awhile. But they wear out, fall off, leave little bits of rubbery shit all over and are just generally annoying. The regular thumbsticks hurt my thumbs like hell so some kind of mod was necessary. So far I really like them. They don't make me play any better (and I didn't think they would) but my thumbs don't hurt! Wootz!

Alright - back to it. I want to have my little bit of work done by lunch so I can play CoD this afternoon...

How far of a drive is St. Paul from where you are now? Do you have to go over bridges and such? In Ottawa we have that problem: going from Ottawa to Gatineau (or vice versa) isn't far according to mapquest... but hte bridges are hellish.

WHen I was cross training iwth my friend during his 2 weeks notice before leaving, I shadowed him for the first week and then the 2nd week he basically worked from home. If i had a problem i couldn't figure out, i'd call him or IM him. In IT you need to learn by doing and it worked out pretty good. Too bad the job didn't work out though, they decided to take the opportunity of my friend leaving the expensive 'director' level job to cut IT operation expenses by not hiring a replacement for him and moving their cheap help desk guy in NY back out here to SF. I'm still kind of in for server projects but no full time offer will be coming. The hunt continues.

J - I live right between Minneapolis and St. Paul but a little South. I'm 11 miles from both. Very easy commutes either direction. Minneapolis just has a better skyway system with more shops/restaurants/bars - for lunch breaks and happy hours and such. I thought I read somewhere that Cananda has skyway systems in their cities too?? No? Tank - sorry to hear that stint didn't work out. Keep on, man. Something will find you. Thanks Dastard.

We have Skywalks in my Canadian City (Winnipeg). It covers a fair amount of the main buildings and shopping areas downtown, and is currently being expanded to include our Convention Centre. Those things are a necessity during winters here, where it can be colder than -40 (Celsius=Fahrenheit) with the wind. The LAN, still undecided. I think the only way I can stomach the cost this year is to drive to your neck of the woods again with the family and fly to Chicago from there for the nice sub-$200 pricepoint! :)
