Shared on Fri, 09/21/2007 - 22:38I'm sitting in the small town of Broaddus, just outside of Lufkin, Texas. I'm "surfing" the net on a Gateway PC older than dirt with a dial-up modem. By the the time I reach a site, I forget what I went there for.
You see, it's my mother-in-law's 80th birthday. She had polio when she was younger, had a brain aneurism ten years ago, fell and broke her pelvic bone three years ago . . .and has the spirit of a twenty year old. She and her husband go to Bossier City to the casinos regularly, and she always comes back with more than she left with. We play Skip-Bo, and I get my butt kicked every time. She challenged another lady in one of those fancy carts to a race in the Wal-Mart parking lot once; the other lady looked at her like she had lost her mind. She has far from lost her mind. Sharp wit, excellent memory. . .remarkable woman.
The only reason I don't like coming is because it's a five hour drive, and it's not the most scenic route in Texas. And right before I left, I had a bit of a confrontation with my boss. Yet another client went around me to the next level, and she not only allows this, but seems to encourage it. I emailed the client and asked if there was a reason why she didn't contact me, and if there was, what could I do to eliminate that. I sent a copy to my supervisor. Immediately after work I was called into the office, the doors were shut, and I was reprimanded for sending an inflamatory memo. I'm sick of people going over my head, and the note was not in the least bit negative. I took a stand, said that it was her opinion that it was negative, and that I was not going to tolerate that happening to me any longer because I deserved more respect than that. And then I asked if she thought I was so ignorant that I would cc a copy of an inappropriate email to her. I cited other examples of this type of thing occuring, and questioned why the client was never asked to talk to me first. I got a lot off my chest, and when I left I'm pretty sure she had a good idea about me being fed up with that kind of crap. I work for little money at the same profession for 24 years and I get that kind of treatment? No more. I've got one more year after this one, and I will leave with my dignity if nothing else. I think reasons to nail me were actively being sought. Either today put an end to it, or my professional group attorney is going in with me next time.
Wow, I guess I am still ticked a bit.
Back to the original point. My mother-in-law has no idea that the grand kids and others are going to show up for the celebration. Well, I think she knows more than they think she knows. I've seen her bluff before, and she's no amateur.
No jokes, no funny stories today. . .but I did hear a cool saying this weekend:
You plant the seed, God grows the fruit!
