Shared on Sun, 07/29/2007 - 19:21Today was my second day at the flea market. Yesterday it was supposed to rain, and it didn't. But the threat of it kept some vendors at home. I need the money, and I've got too much little "stuff". I would have gone if it was sleeting. But, I was blessed with a decent day and cleared a couple of hundred dollars. So today, much less chance of rain. What happens? I get set up, and it starts to POUR. It's a covered area, but when it rains like that, no one shows up. Still, I sold some nicer glassware to some dealers at my cost, and it was stuff I couldn't sell, so good luck to them! I really do hope they can move it.
I've shared with you before my hobby of observing people. Today was a good day for it. The guy next to me was a Cheyenne American selling handmade medicine bags, etc. He was a super nice guy, and sold stuff for me when I had to "go". He made dream catchers, and I promised I'd bring him a bag of smaller parrot feathers in the next couple of weeks. He was pretty excited by that, as he hadn't had access to many before. My African Grey has grey tailfeathers with red tips. They should look pretty awesome on a dreamcatcher.
The couple across from us bring wrought iron in from Mexico and sell it. He sell me things wholesale (really nice pot racks for 30 bucks), and he's a good man, too. In fact, I've only met a couple of vendors I'd rather not be around because they are just mean people. I know there is a reason, but I still try to avoid them.
And the customers, man, you name it! They are easy to deal with for the most part. Part of this flea market culture is bartering. I would rather put a cheap price on something and sell it. I'm forced to jack my prices up to get what I need to get. They will actually turn around and walk off if you offer them something for a dollar and won't cut it down to 75 cents. It is a cultural thing, though. You just have to accept it, understand it, and realize you can't change it.
While I'm thinking about it, if anyone has something they want identified and learn what the approximate value is, send me pics of it from different angles, and a pic of the mark on the bottom, I'd be happy to research it and give you a free appraisal on it. I need the practice. Furniture is a bit harder for me, but I'm pretty good with pottery, depression glass, primitives, old toys, etc.
Oh, and not only do my toenails hurt; my whole body hurts. Loading, unloading, selling, wrapping . . .by yourself is a bear. I pretty much told them today where the paper was and the bags, and if they wanted it wrapped, they could do it. By the way, I did $675 in two days. Considering the weather, I was a happy camper. My record is over $700 in one day, but the weather was great, and I had help. But, I'm happy to have the money instead of the dead stock I had much of the money tied up in.
See you online. . .my fingers don't hurt.
