Rocking Numbers

So Viacom's CFO Tom Dooley said in their recent earnings call that Rock Band 2 has sold 2 million units world wide. Which was below expectations, but still pretty good sales figures if you ask me. But that wasn't the real news.

Last year's #1 selling game world-wide was Wii Play, followed by a few other Wii games. Rock Band 2 didn't even make the top 10. However, according to Dooley, Rock Band 2 was the highest revenue generating game world wide across every genre for 2008. Which means they have sold enough DLC to over take $264 million in sales of Wii Play. That is an insane amount of DLC if you ask me.

But then I remember that I have spent probably $100 on DLC myself...

The price of Wii Play bundle is something around $40 from what I see on google shopping. The price of Rock Band 2 bundle is something in the $150s If they count bundle sells (including the extra instruments for RB2) of course their overall sells will be higher. Their system costs 3x as much, plus they offer DLC.) I bet if Wii play had DLC with more mini games it could have easily taken the # 1 revenue spot as well. Since I believe Wii is still the #1 selling console.

I highly doubt the DLC model would work for Wii Play. I'm willing to bet most people pick it up since it's only $10 than just a Wiimote, play through the crappy games a couple of times and then never pick it up again.
