So I opted for the Walther PPS (Compact P99 if you will) for my CCW class and weapon.  It felt really great in my hand (so did the P99) but thought it was a better carry weapon.  Ironically, Patty, my wife, thinks it's kind of a wuss gun and she thought I should have gotten the FN Five Seven.  She knows ZERO about guns, but thought that one was the shit, though almost twice as expensive.  She told me to plan on getting that one next, in January, as she thought I should have that one as well.  Does anyone have any experience with the Five Seven???  Is it that good???  It is kind of pricey, but hey I'm not going to argue with her if she insists.  Can anybody recommend a good, quick access safe???  Should I go wallsafe next to the bed, or something else???  Right now I was looking at the biometric wallsafe.  Thoughts???

The FN Five Seven is a nice pistol. I would not recommend it for you however. Here's why: The Five Seven fires a unique 5.7mm cartridge. It was designed to be a companion pistol to the FN P90 PDW which fires the same cartridge. Ammunition is not cheap and I don't know of any ammo manufacturer making 5.7mm that makes a less expensive training version. It is a full sized pistol. Fine for military / police /open carry with a holster. not so much for CCW. It is an expensive pistol. Here's a scenario for you. You spend $1200 - 1500 for the Five Seven shoot it a little bit, then decide in a year or two you don't really need it and try to sell it or trade it to a gun store only to get your feelings hurt when the guy behind the counter, will only give you $400-500 (maybe if you're lucky) for it. I don't own one, but I guy I work with does. He's single, no kids and buys toys. The Five Seven shoots beautifully and is a lot of fun, but, for what he paid for the pistol and ammo, I could've bought a Glock or a Springfield XD and a case of ammo and still had money left over. If your wife wants to buy you one, then more power to her, but I'd focus more on practicing with your PPS. As far as a good gun safe, I go with Gun Vault. They make a biometric lock safe that can be programed with your and your wife's fingerprint . I use the older combination finger pad model, but it works fine for me. They use a battery, but I change it out about twice a year and haven't had an issue. Just my two cents which is about what its worth.

Not so long ago at a Lock-Con, battery-powered locks (Biometric and 128bit encoded) were lockpicked in less than 20 seconds using a simple garden-variety magnet. Make sure the lock has it's battery shielded or moved to the back of the lock, to prevent from malicious opening of your vault by way of a magnet. Check the internet for Lockpick-clubs (It's a championship-sport with it's practicioners aiding the lockmakers-industry) for information on the true worth of the safe and it's locking-machanism.
