A Little Story..

Something really occurred to me today at work, and I think it is something I have known for a very long time, if not as long as I have been capable of thought. I hate bullies.

These types of people come in all shapes, sizes, races, creeds, genders, and age. In fact just today my 4 year old son told me about a bully in his pre-kindergarten class, she is 4 as well. She has pushed him off the slide and taken toys from him during playtime. My son is a very friendly kid, and really has not yet learned how to deal with this type of confrontation. As a kid, I never had to deal with bullies, as I was always able to make people laugh which I believe saved me from it, so I am sure my son in time will learn ways of dealing with it.

I work with bullies. People who instead of using good social skills to get what they want, just take it, or scare people into giving it to them. These people are idiots, but for some reason seem to excel in their jobs. Possibly because, even their boss is afraid not to give them what they want. What a sad way to get through life.

But perhaps the worst kind of bully is the one who picks on people unable and incapable of standing up for themselves. Case in point:

As many of you know, I work in a prison. In fact it is an adult male medium security facility. This means we have a lot of bad people in our walls. Some of these people do very bad things to other people. Of course, I generally don’t give two shakes about inmates, but even I draw the line. Recently 2 new arrivals (skinners) arrived at our facility. Both suffered pretty severe developmental disabilities. Both have the cognitive ability of 4 or 5 year old children. Basically these are 4 or 5 year olds in 20 year old bodies put into an environment of rape and other various forms of violence. These 2 can not stand up for themselves. Needles to say they were both immediately preyed upon by older more violent inmates (bullies), who claimed them as their property.  Essentially, they are owned much like you or I would own a dog. Only difference, we would not treat our dogs the way these 2 have been treated by their “owners”. They were forced to do “housework” for their owner. Cleaning cells, clothes, shoes, laundry, and other various odd house keeping jobs. They were also forced into various sexual acts, yes they were raped, and brutally. Then these 2 human beings, essentially children, were then forced to fight each other, while their “owner” took bets from the onlookers. A pretty sweet deal for him. That is until I found out about it. I am somewhat known as a staff member that inmates can come to when they want certain information handled with care, such as this type of situation. Other inmates want it to stop, but just can’t, so they will in private come to me. Needless to say, they are safe for now, but I am sure as long as they are in prison, they will have to deal with bullies. And our prison is known to be a softer easier place to do time. If an inmate is able to defend himself, he is on his own, but this was the saddest thing I have ever seen in my life. Moral: Stay out of prison!

It's sad. That's a failure of our justice system. Guys like that have no business in a facility like your's regardless of their crime. A state mental facility would be a better fit for them, at least it sounds that way from what you wrote. I've always thought your job must be interesting, but I don't know that I could do it. A lot of the folks there deserve to be there, but perhaps a few don't. Kind of sad.

I hate bullies! Stomping there feet untill they get there way! Just the other day some ass clown was bulling my wife on the road for nothing, just because he is a coward and a woman is an easy target! There everywhere, I am in an organization that is suposed to "do the right thing" or live a sperital way of life, and there is bullies! It makes me puke!

Why aren't the two of them in a psychiatric facility?

That is a question for the courts. Actually, their situation is not all that uncommon. Our legal system has very little problem with sending to prison people with a low developemental age or a severe psychological problem. I have seen many people in my career who have no business in a prison. As a system, we tend to have a difficult time understanding how a person who looks 20 doesn't have the reasoning ability of an adult. I mean there is no way we would send an actual 4 year old to a prison, but we (juries) have no problem send a person with the physical age of 20, even if they are actually only 4 mentally. But there are other reasons why inmates are bullied, this one just happened to piss me off!

Are you able to get a case made for their transfer? Maybe with some very quietly taken statements you will be able to make a positive change for these young men. I'm rooting for you.

A transfer is unliekly unless it is to a facility where they will be placed on permanent protective custody status. This is sort of like being at maximum security. Except they will be locked up 23 hours per day in a cell by themselves not because they are a danger to others but becasue they are in danger from others. It really sucks to be them. But again, prison is made not to be much fun.

Just as I got out of the USMC, I interviewed at a CCA medium security men's facility in OK. My Dad set it up, he was chief of police in the nearby town. I didn't want to go, but I did it for my Pop's sake. When I saw the seg units, I nearly passed out. Prison sucks, but that is some VERY tough time to do. Hopefully things will get better for these two guys. Still rooting for you.
